The Most Unusual Olympic Events

July 26, 2012 by Julie 76 Comments

I know I’m not alone in my excitement for the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games tomorrow.

Whenever the Olympics are on and we’re at home, the television is almost always tuned into the latest event.

I love the energy of the Olympics and watching the world’s best athletes is inspiring, gripping and just plain exciting. Ryan and I have been talking about the Olympics for a few weeks now and this morning as we were eating breakfast he started telling me about an article he read that mentioned previous unusual Olympic events.

According to CNN, the 10 strangest Olympic events from the past and present include:

  1. Solo Synchronized Swimming: Discontinued in 1992
  2. Club Swinging: Discontinued in 1932
  3. Tug-of-War: Discontinued in 1920
  4. Live Pigeon Shooting: Only present in the 1900 Olympics Games
  5. Swimming Obstacle Course: Discontinued in 1900
  6. Roller Hockey: Only present in the 1992 Olympic Games
  7. La Canne (Like fencing but with a cane): Debuted at the 1924 Olympics
  8. Rope Climbing: Discontinued in 1932
  9. Trampoline: Current Olympic event
  10. Race Walking: Current Olympic event

Trampoline!? Sign me up!

Lunch

Today’s lunch was so fresh and fantastic that I “mmm-ed” my way through the entire thing.

watermelon feta salad

I topped a base of arugula and spinach with watermelon, feta cheese, salt and pomegranate salad dressing. (The contrast of the salt with the watermelon is so good!)

Watermelon + Feta + Arugula = One of my all-time favorite salad combinations

On the side I ate a whole wheat English muffin topped with honey and shredded coconut.

This combination has quickly become my favorite post-dinner snack the past three nights in a row. It’s sweet but satisfying at the same time. Highly recommended!

Question of the Afternoon

  • If you could compete in one of the above unusual Olympic events, which event would you choose?

I’d be all over the swimming obstacle course or trampoline event. Both sound like a blast, though I’m sure they’d totally kick my butt.

I would totally do trampoline! Or curling. That one’s pretty ridiculous, too.

I would totally go with trampoline or tug of war!! I have seen race walkers before and they are flippin’ fast! There is definitely a technique to it and they go just as fast or faster than many runners.

Kinda wish I was going to see La Canne and not fencing now… beating each other with sticks sound far more fun! Tug o’ War would be amazing, imagine what the competitors would be like!

Have you ever tried Earth Balance coconut peanut butter? I put it on english muffins all the time and it is sooo delicious. Coconut and peanut butter are two of my obsessions so the combination is incredible.

I’m so psyched the Olympics are starting! I even make sure I’m off the night of the opening ceremonies every time (work night shift). 🙂

Hey Julie! That salad sure looks refreshing. Did you make the dressing or is it store bought? If store bought, what is the brand? Thanks!

Aw man, they stopped rope climbing!? That would’ve been so neat. But so quick, so they would have to make the ripe like 2stories Hugh hahahaha…. So insane

This list is so funny! I am in London right now, but sadly I don’t have Olympic tickets. The other day my friend and I were near The Mall (the road that runs to Buckingham Palace) and we overheard police officers talking about how, among other events, long distance walking would be taking place there! We both did a double take when we heard that!!

I kind of want to do the swimming obstacle course. I feel like I do that anytime I get into a pool with my boyfriend or little brother anyway!

Yall are really going to laugh at this. When I was young I trained for an Olympic event. Yes I did and a lot of my facebook friends did too. But guess what??? It did not make it. Trampoline did. It was back in the late 70s and early 80s. The olympics were looking to add new sports. Are y’all ready… You wanna know… Yes!!! It is….BATON TWIRLING!! And yes it is a fraking athletic event!! It has 2 different Nationals every year and its is extremely competitive. I used to practice 6 to 8 hours a day just to be in the top 7!! Look it up!! Interesting!!
