Hello, Gym

December 27, 2011 by Julie 51 Comments

Hello there, gym! Sorry I’ve neglected you in favor of cookies… and cake… and pie… and candy.

But we can be friends again, right?

My relationship with the gym took a brief hiatus over the holiday weekend, but returned with a vengeance this morning.

Workout

Ryan and I hit the gym nice and early and began our workouts with 20 minutes of cardio on the elliptical before hopping off to complete our respective strength workouts.

Today I focused on my legs which was a little challenging since my right leg is still very bruised at the top of my thigh from the bike accident. (The bruises are even larger today and the outsides are turning that beautiful yellow/green color. Dead sexy.)

My muscles aren’t sore, but the bruising is tender, so I made sure to not squat down as far as I usually do and altered my workout a bit to be sensitive to my injuries.

In the end my workout looked like this:

leg workout

Though I kept the weights lighter than usual, it still felt great to work up a sweat and kick my day off on a healthy note.

Breakfast

Today’s breakfast was a nice change from the gingerbread, pumpkin pie and red velvet pancakes I had yesterday. I seem to go into sugar overdrive over the holidays and I think my body is in sugar shock.

Even though our food selection is extremely limited at the moment (we must go to the grocery store today), I did my best to assemble a breakfast that included healthy fats, protein and wholesome carbohydrates.

christmas 2011 154

I topped a whole wheat English muffin with two pieces of muenster cheese (we were out of eggs) and raspberry jelly and served it alongside a small bowl of trail mix.

I also sipped on a hot mug of my new favorite coffee.

I am in love with my new “J” mug! It was a Christmas present from my sister from Anthropologie and I think it’s the cutest thing in the world. It’s even more awesome when filled with peppermint crème coffee. Mmm.

As I went to make myself a cup of coffee this morning, I realized that the only kinds of coffee I own are seasonal flavors. Apparently I like a festive cup o’ joe!

Ryan’s company actually gave its employees Monday and Tuesday of this week off of work for Christmas, so I have a buddy at home with me today. We plan to use today to get our lives back to normal and do lots of cleaning (it looks like Santa threw up on our kitchen table), laundry and dishes. We have hopes of taking Sadie on a brief hike today as well if the weather allows it. Crossing our fingers that the rain holds off for a bit this morning!

P.S. The Fashion page was updated today.

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I love that mug! I’ve always wanted one of the anthro initial mugs but this one is way cooler than those older white ones with just the black letter.
I’m a seasonal coffee lover too. Hazelnut creme in my cup right now 🙂

It’s awesome that you guys go the gym together. I’ve noticed that couples that workout together seem happier in general.

Julie, I am looking to start fresh next week. Where do you get your workouts from and what do you use to journal them so clearly. Glad you had a wonderful holiday. Hope your legs are feeling better soon.

i typically make them up as i go and use a bunch of workouts i’ve done for years as my inspiration (you may see a bunch here: https://www.pbfingers.com/work-it-out/workouts/ ) and will take moves i see in magazines, etc. and incorporate them into my workouts as well. when i post images of workouts, i create them in excel or microsoft paint and then do a screen shot save the image and upload it onto the blog.

Doesn’t the gym feel great after a break?? My friend jokingly said after we both indulged, slept in, and took a little hiatus…”This is what it must feel like to be the average person, huh?” How funny. I think the holidays make me extra grateful that I have a functioning body and am able to workout regularly! I did legs, too. I think it really gets my metabolism going the most (larger muscles).

I have quitea few seasonal coffee blends that I’ve been trying to get through as well! I think I am pretty burnt out with anything pumpkin spice or eggnog flavored at this point. The craving starts out strong in September, but by January 1st I definitely don’t want to see it again until the following year! I try to use it up by sneaking a scoop into the morning brew, but my husband (who isn’t a fan of flavored coffees) always catches me! Looks like I may be saving the rest in the freezer.

Although I love regular coffee and always have a bulk of it at home, I get seasonal flavors when they’re on sale, so I rotate them everyday 😛
