On Sunday my mother-in-law and I joked about using the song “Oh Happy Day” as our morning alarm. It is impossible to wake up in a bad mood when that song is blaring!
I probably should have used that song as my alarm today because when 4:20 a.m. rolled around and I was greeted with an annoying “beep, beep, beep,” all I wanted to do was roll over and go back to sleep. It took me a while to get into my groove this morning, but eventually it happened. I probably have my tumbler of coffee to thank for the nice little jolt of energy that finally hit me around 6 a.m.
My shift at work went well and I set up three fitness assessments for next week that I hope will morph into personal training clients.
Once I was done working for the day, I changed into shorts and a tank top and went through another Best Body Boot Camp workout. The most challenging part of the workout was, without a doubt, the tabata-style jumping lunges and jump squats. I completed jumping lunges for 20 seconds followed by a 10 second rest, 20 seconds of jump squats and another 10 second rest. Complete four total rounds and just try to tell me you’re not out of breath! It was tough!
Lunch
By the time I made it home, I was more than ready for a filling lunch and reheated some leftovers.
In my bowl:
- Corn
- Ham
- Broccoli
- Onion
- Green onion
About an hour later, I found myself back in the kitchen blending up another green lemonade smoothie. I’m lovin’ them lately!
Now it’s time to pack up and hit the road for Jacksonville where I will be through Sunday morning.
I am attending a conference that kicks off tonight and lasts through Friday and my group exercise certification workshop is in Jacksonville on Saturday. See ya from the beach!
Question of the Afternoon
- Is your alarm the usual annoying beep or do you wake up to music? Any great alarm wake up songs out there?
Jen says
I use my phone as an alarm, so I set music to get me out of bed. On days I have to be at work by 6, my alarms (I have 3) are the “Walking On Sunshine/Halo” mash-up from Glee, “A Beautiful Day” by India.Arie, and “Good Morning” by Mandisa and tobyMac. It’s hard to be in a bad mood with those three.
Trina says
I second the “Good Morning” song by Mandisa, Jen!!! It’s awesome!!! If you haven’t heard it before, Julie…you’ve gotta listen to it! 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Have a great trip!!
And seriously, I HATE plyo lunges!
Samantha @ Sweetly Striving says
I don’t know if this is interesting, but the tone I wake up to is called Irish forest or something weird like that-it sounds just like an Irish jig. I switch between that and the James Bond theme! 🙂
Holly says
I have Bone Thugs “First of the Month” chorus.. “wake up, wake up, wake up, it’s the first of the month”.
Julie @ twosaucysisters.wordpress.com says
OMG I LOVE THAT SONG!!! Elijah Kelley is aaaaamzing! It’s so true though, that song always makes me feel happy! 🙂
Katelyn says
If I wake up to beeping-I’m grouchy all morning. I wake up to music-lately it’s been 5 o’clock by T-Pain because I get up at that time haha.
Katie says
Slumber by NEEDTOBREATHE is my alarm! It’s a great song to get you going in the mornings…it’s usually on my shower playlist as well.
“Days they force you
Back under those covers
Lazy mornings they multiply
But glory’s waiting
Outside your window
So wake on up from your slumber
And open up your eyes”
Christina Nickles says
Oh my gosh, does anyone remember the singing chicken alarm clock from waaaay back when?! I’d kill for that alarm and his happy little tune.,.”wow, yeeeeah, hey baby wake up,cone and dance with me”
Lauren says
I totally had that alarm clock! I have to say that I didn’t always appreciate his song on those early school day mornings though. But I don’t think anything could have woken me up happily in high school haha.
Kathy says
I still have the singing chicken. Hey baby wake up come and dance with me….. LOVE it.
I loaned it to my husband to use. He seems to really like it. So cute. But even at 4:20 in the morning, that could still be a bit annoying!! LOL
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny says
We usually set our alarm to whatever cell phone ring resembles the sounds of the beach…waves crashing, seagulls. We also leave the curtains and blinds open at night to let the natural light in each morning…definitely helps me get up! (Though I’m not sure there’s much natural night at 430)
krissy says
I wake up to Taylor Swift songs haha! I hate anything loud and startling in the morning!
Tara | Treble in the Kitchen says
My alarm is that iPhone song that everyone has….pretty annoying since I hear it so often! Anything tabata leaves me out of breath, but adding lunges to the mix!? OUCH!!! Good luck this weekend!
Deb says
I wake up to “Dammit” by Blink 182. Mainly because the title is how I feel every time my alarm goes off.
Danielle @ itsaharleyyylife says
have a great trip!
Bek @ Crave says
I very rarely look forward to my alarm- I really should use a cool song haha or melody on my phone 😛
mj says
i love your black bag … when we went on vacation this past march i saw so many women carrying that style bag when in the airport and all around d.c. but haven’t found one in a mall or store … would you mind telling me where you found yours? 🙂 🙂
Ashli - But What About Protein? says
I have the same bag – love it!. It’s a Longchamp Le Pliage – you can purchase it online at longchamp.com 😀
mj says

joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
In college, I used to wake up to ‘Here Comes the Sun’ which is one of my fav songs…. it def got old after a few hundred wake-ups though!
Nicole says
I use my phone for my alarm, and the worst is when I am out somewhere and I hear the same alarm go off on someone else’s phone. I cringe haha
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
I always wake up to a song, and right now it’s “93 Million Miles”. No particular reason other than I really love it!
courtstar @ star systemz says
My alarm right now is the beep beep as well, I really need something to start my day off right! I do however make sure my first thoughts are either a gratitude for starting the day or a smile. Thanks for sharing! Love + Shine Courtstar
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
I wake up to the radio, but I have a backup alarm on my phone just in case. I used to switch songs every few days, but I’ve had it on Taylor Swift “Mary’s Song” for a long time…mostly because I began associating too many songs with, “Ugh, morning.” Haha! Can’t ruin all of my music that way! 😛
Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen says
I have the same Longchamp purse that you do! I have 3 alarms in the morning lol. One is music on an iHome and the other 2 are on my phone. I actually prefer annoying sounds to wake up to because I easily sleep in. If I forget to set my phone annoying-sounding alarm, I’ll sleep through the music for a little bit! Have a great trip and enjoy the conference!
Brittany @ DulceVie says
I totally agree with you! My iphone alarm used to be one of the standard alarm tones, but I began to sleep through it.. oops. I then changed my alarm to play California Gurls by Katy Perry and I loooove it 🙂 I will be in California this fall for college so it really gets me excited in the morning!
Dawn says
Those green lemonade smoothies look so good! I need at get a new blender so I can start making stuff like that. I can’t stand the standard “beep beep” alarm! I used to listen to music, but then I would sleep through it. Now I use my fitbit as an alarm. It’s on my wrist tracking my sleep and it vibrates softly to wake me up. Works pretty well 🙂
Amanda @runtothefinish says
Super interested to hear more about shine!
I haven’t used an alarm clock for awhile, but maybe walking on sunshine!
CourtLeanne @princessandthejog says
I have to have fun music to wake up to in the morning – the beeping tends to put me in a grumpy mood. I actually used to have Happy Day by Jesus Culture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOkeWURZK_Q as my alarm which worked really well to get me pumped up for the day! Lately I have been waking up to Lion King the Circle of Life! It’s perfect!!

Could you post food suggestions for people like me, who prefer to work out in the mornings, but who can’t do so without eating something and letting it digest first? I CANNOT work out first thing in the morning without eating first (skipping breakfast is a recipe for disaster for me – I’ve passed out before because of it). It’s hard because I have to take into account about an extra two hours before I actually work out, in order to prepare something, eat it, and then let it digest enough so I can work out without feeling sick. I’d love to find something that provides energy, fills me up without feeling too full, high in protein, etc. so that I can hit the trail/gym/dance room quickly after!
