Black Hole of Unhealthy

February 7, 2011 by Julie 71 Comments

I really do make a concerted effort to eat healthy the majority of the time. I try to eat fruits and veggies, whole grains and healthy fats, but sometimes I slip into a black hole of unhealthy eats.

This weekend was one of those times. As I’ve said before, I do not document everything I eat on this blog. Sometimes I feel like I only cover 50 percent of what I eat in a given day! Though I briefly touched on my breakfast yesterday and my dinners over the weekend, I didn’t document the bazillions of cookies I ate, my latest obsession with coconut butter fingers or the nearly half of a container of cream cheese icing I consumed on Friday.

Truth be told, this weekend I felt like my ratio of healthy eating to unhealthy eating was 15 percent healthy, 85 percent unhealthy. Not so good!

But, what is good, is that I’ve recognized this pattern. It has been creeping up on me for a while now. Unhealthy weekend eats. I need to revisit my own tips for maintaining healthy eating on the weekend. Easier said than done, huh?

What I hope will keep me on a healthy-eating track is remembering how I feel after eating crap-tastic food all weekend. I am left feeling lethargic, bloated and just plain crabby!

It never ceases to amaze me that what I eat not only affects how I feel physically, but how I feel mentally as well. It’s no fun feeling drained. Fueling my body with nutritious foods makes me feel alive, energetic, healthy and happy. That should be motivation enough to remember that my body runs better on nutritious foods.

I’m feeling better already today after eating a healthy breakfast and a veggie-packed lunch.

Lunch

My mid-day meal included a veggie bacon sandwich served on a whole wheat sandwich thin with chive and onion cream cheese, spinach and tomato slices.

Close Up

On the side I enjoyed a sliced orange bell pepper.

Oh veggies, I missed you this weekend.

Upcoming Wedding Q&A Post

I’ve received quite a few emails containing questions about our wedding, how we handled the planning process and more. I figured I would compile these questions into one big wedding Q&A post! If you have any questions you would like me to address in the upcoming post, please leave a comment below or email me at pbfingers@gmail.com.

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

How much did you spend on your bridal party gifts, and did you struggle with deciding what to give each person?

it really is amazing how much good or bad food affects us mentally and physically. I always feel so much better after getting a bunch of greens in my system after falling off track!

I think sometimes I need to eat super unhealthy, just so that I can remember how awful it makes me feel. Apparently I have a bad memory 😉

It never ceases to AMAZE me how fast bad food makes you feel! I swear, I’ll eat bad food for one day and feel like I’ve put 10 pounds on because I’m huffing and puffing up the stairs! It’s crazy how much food can affect you!

It is always hard for me to eat healthy on the weekend, and somehow I usually forget about how overindulging makes me feel like crap. I think this is hard for a lot of people since weekend=fun time. I’m sure you can get back to healthy eating on the weekends in no time! Good luck!

I LOVE that you are doing a wedding Q&A! I am getting married in July and I am so excited! My question is, did you do anything specific to get into shape for your wedding….diet or exercise wise?

I had this same thought process yesterday: knowing how crappy I feel after eating unhealthy for a few days – I need to remember that! I’m fighting a cold right now, but I’m excited for it to go away. Then I can really focus on my eating habits and maintaining exercise routines.

    Wedding Questions:
How did you announce your engagement to your family, especially extended family and those out of town?

What would you do differently if you could plan it all again?

More of a pre-wedding question – how much did you and Ryan discuss about getting married before he proposed? Did you have any idea it was coming? Also, did you suggest to him or others (friends, family) what kind of ring you wanted? …. you can probably tell I’m basically in that stage right now haha

    Hi Julie!

    My wedding questions:

    1. with a budget, what do you think is worth splurging on and what do you think is worth doing yourself w/o professional help.

    2. did you go ring shopping together first? where did he buy the ring (online or store)?

    3. buffet or sit-down? and why?

I know these are your personal opinions and you aren’t a wedding expert but thanks for your help 🙂

I definitely get on those junk food kicks too. They are usually on the weekend and often trail into Monday and Tuesday unless I put a stop to them. Case in point….after sweets and a little junk food this weekend, I ate a decent amount of a batch of brownies today…oops!

I know you and Ryan had a honeymoon planned to St. Lucia. Where were you guys going to stay before the weather dilemma? Do you all plan to go back? I’m getting married in September and was considering there but I’m concerned about hurricane season!

Heavy food, especially a lot of it (like around the holidays) can affect me physically and mentally too.

However, I don’t think it’s healthy for it to affect us mentally that much. We know, logically, that a few bad meals isn’t the end of the world and won’t hinder our physical or health goals. In fact, sometimes junk food is a life enhancer — as social events usually evolve around it.

One day, one day…I’ll be mentally fine with it

I know this was posted over a year ago but I just found your blog and saw this link somewhere. I had one of these days yesterday – and the thing is, I didn’t stray from what I usually eat. But the unhealthy black hole I was experiencing was in my mind, I just had this cloud over me all day and I felt like I’d never succeed in having the body I want.

Thank you for this post. It’s so refreshing to see a healthy food blogger admit to not being perfect. Sometimes I feel like if I want to be a healthy living blogger myself that I have to be totally one hundred percent committed all the time. Everyone’s human, but sometimes I feel like we don’t see enough posts like this in the healthy blogging circle!

    Today is a new day!
