Dogs in Weddings

August 17, 2012 by Julie 81 Comments

We’re going to breeze through breakfast because this morning’s blog post topic includes two of my favorite things: Dogs and weddings.

Breakfast this morning was an unattractive but delicious smoothie.

green smoothie

Into the blender went:

  • 1 1/2 frozen bananas
  • Handful of frozen strawberries
  • 1 scoop Optimum Nutrition protein powder (extreme milk chocolate)
  • 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 spoonful almond butter
  • 1 packet Starbucks via instant coffee
  • 2 handfuls fresh spinach
  • Enough almond milk to get everything moving

The packet of instant coffee made this smoothie loosely remind me of a Frappuccino.

Yum!

Dogs in Weddings

With more than one of my best friends getting married next year, my interest in the wedding pictures that pop up on Pinterest seems to have exploded overnight. Since Pinterest wasn’t around when I got married (well, no one knew about it), I’m having a little too much fun scoping out fun ideas for bridal showers, bachelorette parties and the big day.

Last night I saw a bunch of different ideas for incorporating a couple’s dog into their special day. I remember a few of you guys asking whether or not Sadie would be involved in our ceremony back when we were in the middle of planning our wedding day.

julie ryan sadie

A great idea… in theory.

Sadie is the most energetic and happy little thing, but she’s also a little shy around strangers, gets stage fright and only has one speed in her repertoire (sprint).

We saw Sadie’s involvement in our wedding going like this: She is dressed in a lovely little dress which goes smoothly because she loves playing dress up. My sister walks her down the aisle in her harness, which ruins the look of her dress a bit, but is necessary so she doesn’t bound down the aisle like a crazy. Sadie spots Ryan. Goes insane. Sets off in an all-out sprint, pulling my sister down the aisle with her. Arrives in front of the pastor at Ryan’s feet. Begins high-pitched excited whining. Rolls over. Pees herself. Sees me begin to walk down the aisle. Sprints up the aisle toward me. Whines. Pees herself again. Realizes strangers are watching her and immediately wants to be held. Ruins entire ceremony.

Plus, Sadie doesn’t do well playing second fiddle to anyone. Even a bride.

dog bride

Yes, that is what she wore to the brunch the day after our wedding. (You can see her running around in all her dog bride glory in our wedding video at minute 4:55.)

I’ve never attended a wedding where a dog has been involved, but I would love to see a dog flower girl or ring bearer. I think it would be adorable!

Just look!

You just need a dog with the right temperament to handle it! (For the record, I did not find even one picture of a vizsla involved in a wedding. Pugs, on the other hand, seem quite popular in weddings.)

Question of the Morning

  • Have you ever attended a wedding that incorporated a pet into the ceremony?
  • Would you ever consider including your pet in your wedding day?

I’m getting married in March and my fiance wants to use our very large black lab as our ring bearer! His personality is just like Sadie’s – so I’m going with a no! haha

I love my puppy to death, but she is way to hyper to be in a wedding…I can imagine her trying to eat the bottom of a wedding dress!

We got our dog after we got married but I would have loved to have him be apart of our big day. He’s just as much a part of our family as our our blood relatives! 🙂

Oh my god that pug with the bow tie is off the scale cute! I want a dog so badly! But I don’t think i’m ready for the responsibility of having a dog baby just yet. I’ve persuaded my boyfriend that an energetic loving allergy friendly Vizla is the way to go though for when we do take the plunge 🙂

Haha love your illustration. Even though it sounds fun, I think it was already a challenge (but thankfully ended well) with my 2.3 yr. old nephew! 😛 so I can’t imagine how it would be with a dog. Especially a big energetic one~

HAHAHA. I love your assessment of what Sadie probably would have done. 🙂 That is funny stuff. You definitely have to embrace the breed.

I love that Sadie was a part of your special day. My brother’s dog was his best man! He had a corsage too! Secondly, I must recreate your smoothie. Delish!

I have thought about it for others, but it never even crossed my mind when we were planning our wedding (I say “we” like my husband did more than pick the groomsmen’s tuxes).

He did, however incorporate the dog in his proposal 🙂 so cute! Looking back, I kind of wish we had included him in at least some of the engagement pics.

He was definitely in our Christmas card picture, though.

Haha your description of Sadie is hilarious! I never really thought of Charlie being in my wedding but more like being involved in the bridal shower haha. She does this thing with wrapped presents where she just nudges/brings them to me. Last Christmas she decided she was going to bring me any present that was light enough to push to me from under the tree. She didn’t want to open them, she just wanted to give them to me haha.

We actually had our three dogs in our wedding! My husband’s nephews and niece walked them down the aisle along with my husband, then handed them off to our regular dog-sitter, who was waiting at the edge of the altar area. And then your imaginary scenario came to life! Butkus, our bulldog knocked the dogsitter over, then ran up and down the aisle in excitement! It should have been a disaster, but it was hilarious, and it really broke the stress for me, watching it happen from the top of the giant hill we had to walk down. My husband’s brother in law grabbed his leash and everything was back on track. We have some great pictures!

My parents told me about a wedding they attended in which a dog was involved, but not exactly planned – the wedding was at the bride’s childhood house, which has a barn and lots of dogs and horses. One dog is particularly attached to the bride’s mother, so when the bride’s mother walked down the aisle, that dog walked down after her, sat by her during the ceremony, and then walked out after her when it was over! Not planned or rehearsed at all 🙂 And they held the ceremony in a location where the bride’s horse could poke his head out of his stall in the barn and oversee things!

I’m just reading this post – but it’s funny that you mention it. If my dog is still alive when I get married (she’s getting older) she WILL be in my wedding. I love my dog more than anything so to not have her included would break my heart. Plus she’s 12 pounds so the worst she could do it lick every person that pets her 🙂

I agree! I have struggled so much with having our puppy (black lab) in our wedding. We want him there so bad, he’s our dude! At a year old, he is also very energetic & hyper. He is trained with us, but with so many people there he will easily get distracted. It could go either really well or really CRAZY! I decided against it too, it’s to risky. Thanks for sharing your side of the topic!
