High Protein Banana Soft Serve

Come in close for the good stuff. This, my friends, is a glorious bowl of high protein banana soft serve.

We’ll get to that in a minute. Smile

Workout

This morning my workout began with 20 minutes of cardio split between the stair master and the elliptical.

Then it was time for weights! I completed an upper body workout similar to the one I did last Tuesday.

I altered it a bit by taking out the one of the shoulder exercises and all of the ab exercises and adding chest and back exercises. They bore the heck out of me (especially back exercises) and I usually default to working them out in group exercise classes since the strength and TRX classes at my gym are really great about targeting the chest and back, but I incorporated low rows, push ups, chest presses and lat pulldowns into today’s workout. Small victory.

Breakfast

I’m sure many of you have discovered the wonders of banana soft serve thanks to Gena’s blog. It’s simple and the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way. (All you do is place frozen bananas in a food processor and blend them until they turn into creamy soft serve.)

This morning I wanted something cold and creamy for breakfast but wasn’t feeling a smoothie. I remembered banana soft serve and figured I could morph it into a more satisfying breakfast by adding more protein.

I then remembered the banana custard I made a while ago and tweaked it a tiny bit to get today’s breakfast.

Description

This morning I wanted something cold and creamy for breakfast but wasn’t feeling a smoothie. I remembered banana soft serve and figured I could morph it into a more satisfying breakfast by adding more protein.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 frozen bananas, broken into chunks
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt (I used vanilla, though any flavor will work)
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, optional (recommended with plain, honey or vanilla flavored Greek yogurt)
  • Splash of almond milk or milk of choice
  • Chia seeds, nuts, nut butter or fresh berries for garnish

Instructions

  • Place bananas, Greek yogurt, protein powder and cinnamon into food processor and allow to process for a couple of minutes until a smooth, creamy custard begins to form
  • Scrape sides of food processor, add a small amount of almond milk to get everything moving and pulse several more times
  • Scoop soft serve into a bowl and top with desired toppings

banana soft serve protein 014

This breakfast is crazy good and absolutely perfect for a hot, summer morning. I think it would also make a great nighttime snack if you’re in the mood for something sweet, but want a sweet treat with a little punch of protein.

You can also completely customize this recipe and add other frozen fruits, spices or flavors to the mix like frozen strawberries, cocoa powder, peanut butter and more. Next up on my list is peanut butter high protein banana soft serve. Watch out!

Question of the Morning

      • Have you ever made banana soft serve? Do you have any favorite additions or alterations?

Hey Julie!! First of all, that looks delicious.. I had a question about your elliptical/stair master workout. Do you do a certain workout on either or is just kind of a warm up routine?

I’m trying to cross train from running and want to do the elliptical/stairmaster/bike but don’t really know how to do it and get an actual workout. I always get bored/ADD after 5 minutes.. Thanks!

I love making this!! I usually melt some Nutella in the microwave and drizzle it over the banana soft-serve – it ends up hardening again and becomes like a shell. SO delicious.

I love a good, cold smoothie after a hard workout–nice idea for a replacement! I don’t like bananas (icky taste to me!!), but I might try it with other fruit.

P.s. I LOVE working my back and chest, actually. Kinda funny!

Isn’t it crazy how the frozen banana + processor does that? I thought it was total magic!

PS. I have been loving following Sadie’s vet drama. She probably loved a little banana soft serve as well.

I think that would be a bit too much banana for my tastebuds to handle. I wonder what would happen if you froze chunks of avocado and then blended it with cocoa and protein powder and almond milk? Hmmmmm….idea….

I made almost the exact same thing last week, that’s too weird. Except I didn’t add chia to mine! I can never have just plain banana soft serve, because I’m immediately starving after.

This is great! My fiance and I made it tonight and even enjoyed it with the avocado chocolate mouse you have posted in the past.

I recently found your blog and so happy that I did. I love you attitude on life, the recipes are amazing and your relationship with Ryan is very similar to mine with my fiance.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I have stumbled upon a fun new treat with frozen banana. Have you ever heard of vitatops? They are delicious! I blend a chocolate vita top in the blender. I take that out and blend a frozen banana by its self, then add a scoop of a nut butter and a little almond milk…blend again, then re-add the already blended vita top. OMG! Talk about amazing, it tasted like brownie ice cream from DQ with a hint of peanut butter.
Here’s a link to the vitatops!

I just found this idea on Pinterest and after reading about the bananas today, thought you might like it? Slice bananas, top with a bit of peanut butter, dip in melted chocolate, put on wax paper and freeze! I wonder if you could do this with carob chips to lower the fat and calories? They did taste like banana ice cream in the middle!

oh wow. my smaller food processor often wasn’t strong enough. i use my bigger one for soft serve. you could try thawing the bananas for a bit ahead of time… but not too much!
