Insatiable

May 7, 2012 by Julie 81 Comments

Do you ever have days when your appetite seems insatiable no matter how much you eat?

That was me yesterday.

I snacked all day long, though dinner and after dinner and went to bed feeling just plain bleh.

I actually think my eating frenzy started on Saturday at the Taste of Ocala and the momentum kept up through last night. It was a filling weekend, that’s for sure!

When I think back on what I ate yesterday, I realize I didn’t eat much protein outside of my chicken salad for lunch and found myself snacking on cookies and white cheddar popcorn. (I mean how good it that stuff?) More often than not, eating crap just makes me crave more crap.

I think we all have days like this sometimes and I just try to move on and make the next day healthier. It’s no use giving yourself a hard time and I try to remember how much better I feel on days when my diet is filled with healthier fare. I’m using that thought to motivate me to eat healthy food today!

Breakfast

Healthy food for breakfast came in the form of overnight oats topped with a freshly sliced banana.

overnight oats

This was actually batch number two of overnight oats that I made last night. Batch number one was consumed after dinner as an evening snack. (This happens quite often when I make overnight oats, actually. It’s like they call to me from the fridge.)

10overnight oatmeal

I also had a hot mug of crème brulee coffee on the side.

creme brulee fresh market coffee

A little caffeine for a productive Monday morning!

Workout

Before breakfast, I headed to the gym with Ryan for a quality workout.

I began with a 20 minute treadmill workout that got my heart rate up and left me super sweaty.

Then it was time for some strength training.

I did a total body superset workout that looked like this:

total body superset workout

Here are links to some of the exercises that may be confusing:

  • Walking Lunge with Medicine Ball Twist
  • Deadlift to Row
  • Cross Body Bicep Hammer Curl

It was a fast-moving workout that challenged me and made my muscles burn. Victory!

PBF May Book Club

After capturing slightly more than 48 percent of the votes, the book selected for the PBF’s May Book Club is Still Missing by Chevy Stevens.

still missing chevy stevens

We’ll be discussing the book on June 1.

Happy reading!

P.S. The Fashion page was updated this morning!

Question of the Morning

  • What do you do on days when your appetite seems insatiable?

On days when I cannot seem to satisfy my appetite no matter how much I eat, I try to make a cognizant effort to eat healthy snacks that are high in healthy fat and protein, like apple slices with peanut butter or trail mix. I will also try to get out of the house and do something since I find that this feeling often happens to me when I’m at home, procrastinating on something I should be doing like cleaning or freelance work.

I didn’t follow either of these little tricks yesterday though… cookies and white cheddar popcorn simply called to me. Smile

That was totally me yesterday also! I could not satisfy my hunger – slightly embarrassing that I was hungry after breakfast, lunch and dinner. I blame a little bit of a hangover, no exercise and being away for the weekend! Thank god Monday is here to kick me back into gear!

I have days like that all the time, especially the weekends! I usually try to have a big bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter…usually does the trick, but not always 🙂

So excited to finally participate in book club this month! I’m ordering it RIGHT now so there are no porblems!

I am 98% positive this post has created a monster inside of me who will demand payment in the form of white cheddar popcorn. I love it. I have started making popcorn on the stove (we do not have a microwave) and then coating it with butter flavored Pam, Adobo seasoning, and parm cheese. It is also delicious!

Oh I totally have those insatiable days too! When they hit, I try to fill up on high volume, less-calorie-dense foods (usually veggies and water-filled fruits like melon), as well as lots of water. Like you said, the next day is always a good one to start fresh!

the days that i notice my appetite is out of control i think about what i ate so far that day… i usually come to realize that my protein intake is lacking because that’s what usually helps me feel satisfied and full.

I have a love/hate relationship with days like that. They only happen once every couple of months, so when they come around I usually just indulge. Which means I eat as much frozen yogurt and fruit as I want. And the next day, I always feel like garbage, and swear i’ll never do that again. It’s a viscious cycle.

This was me a few days ago–but I usually just roll with it. Especially if I am eating a lot of good food and protein–b/c usually that means my body was missing that from the day before.
If it’s just junk after junk, then I usually grab and apple and go on a walk, b/c I know mybody doesn’t necessarily need that crap. It works! But of course, if I want ice cream, I am going to have it. It’s a balance that every person needs to be in tune with herself to figure out 🙂

    Great looking workout!

I am the same way about feeling better when I have a day of healthy eats..yesterday was not really that day but I started my day off with a batch of overnight oats too and I already feel like this day is starting off on the right foot:)

We all have hungry days! They’re the worst! I do the same thing, snack on something healthy yet satisfying like fruit with peanut butter (yum!). I read that your metabolism increases slightly during the time of the month, and I find sometimes that’s the culprit for my hungry days. Sorry for the borderline TMI haha, but another trick is to avoid buying my favorite snacks at that time!

Hahah your stomach was probably stretched out from the Taste of Ocala! You were on a ROLL! I find when I can’t satisfy my hunger, I also try to at least have healthy snacks (though usually when this strikes, I have undeniable cravings for junk food) AND drink lots of water. Dehydration can SERIOUSLY affect your body’s hunger signals.

If I’m going to have one of those days … it’s usually on a Sunday! It always just seems like a snacking day, and then I end up feeling crappy too. I tend to try and eat some PB or nuts or something … but hey, sometimes endless amounts of pita chips do the trick too. Right? (No….)

I have had a few of those days recently and have a similar plan of attack as you mention. Just try and eat as I need to, but keep the snacks as healthy as possible. I also will have a big glass of water before I eat more, in case its just thirst versus hunger.

I do the same thing and try to get out of the house. Usually when my appetite seems insatiable, it’s because I’m bored and need to go do something. Other times though I can attribute it to a tougher than normal workout and I just roll with it, assuming that my body needs the extra fuel!

I think we all have days like that – I blame hormones 🙂 It happens to me once or twice a month or so. As long as it doesn’t exceed that, then I figure it’s not a HUGE problem… as long as I am not doing it out of boredom, loneliness, sadness, etc… then you can’t just focus on how to stop but the root of the problem as well. I’m pretty sure hormones are to blame most of the time though! When it happens I usually indulge and just remember that I run like a maniac so it’s all right 🙂 Or I pick up the phone and call an old friend to catch up… you can’t be crunching in someone’s ear!

I don’t think being insatiably hungry once in a while is a bad thing! I try to do the same thing, though, and fill in the cracks with healthy stuff, like almond butter bananas or oatmeal and jam. Sometimes I’ll make a trip to get frozen yogurt- the sort that tastes like tart soft serve, in a shop with a wall full of toppings!

Ahh I think that I had the EXACT same day yesterday! I swear no matter WHAT I ate I was not satisfied! I’m atrributing it to the fact that Cinco de Mayo got the best of me the night before and I was slighty “under the weather” yesterday morning – so dehydrated and hungry! I tihnk that days like these are good for me once in a while and its definitely not worth getting down on yourself! It makes me more motivated to eat healthier becuase I know how much better I feel! That happens to me all the time! I find that it’s usually worse on Fridays or weekends, probably because I think of those days as more indulgent days anyway. I think the best way to stop my cravings is to drink a lot of water (which fills me up) or to chew a piece of minty gum. I also try to do something productive to distract myself, like read a book or go for a bike ride, but that only works for so long! Sometimes you just gotta give in!

That was me on Saturday. My tricks to stop snacking include: painting my nails (don’t want to ruin the polish), knitting, coloring. Leaving the house and go “browsing” somewhere where I KNOW I won’t actually buy anything. Take the dogs for a walk. Anything to just break the mental need to snack.

PS. Idk if you’ve figured out your milk frother yet, but I have one of those and they are the jammm. Just pour a little bit of milk in a cup, submerge the frother and turn it on! If you warm up the milk first it gets even frothier and more like a legit latte. (But if you turn on the frother before submerging it, better hope you’ve put it in a tall class because it’ll get messy!)

I used to get mad at myself and beat myself up over it, but now I really work hard on letting it go. Tomorrow and the next day are new days, and I take that extra food as extra energy to get through my tough zumba-teaching schedule. I think we can all relate to days like that! I try to pay close attention to my body when this comes up:
Step One: Hydrate – dehydration stimulates serious food cravings
Step Two: Reach for a healthy fat like nuts or nut butter on an apple(helllllloooo pfingers!) This usually defends against any real hunger
Step Three: My rule of thumb is, if I am craving something specific consistently – I make a healthier version of it, or I just allow myself a planned for splurge
    .
I think we are so conditioned to feel badly for these times, but maybe – just maybe – there are physiological reasons for it!

Thanks for the great work outs!! I’m definitely going to try this one. When you do transition workouts with weights, like this one, do you use the big 45lb barbells with weights, or the smaller, more manageable bar bells? I find it really hard to transition between workouts using the big barbell, but the only small barbells my gym has have a pre-determined weight on them and they don’t go up very high, so I was curious what you used and how you transitioned from one to the next. Do you just collect all the equipment and have it out ready to use?
