I tried my best to scrub the hardened liquid off, but it left residue and I had a terrible feeling in my gut that no miracle solution was going to get it off.
As it turns out, my feelings were right and I now need part of my car repainted. My initial estimate of $500 to repair the mirror skyrocketed to nearly $1,700 and I may have to file a claim with my insurance company to help with the cost. (I am planning on getting another estimate as well.)
Blah.
(See how Ryan always tries to be the favorite? And see how Sadie gives me death looks whenever I interrupt their bonding?)
Though I’m obviously upset about the unexpected expense (and really annoyed with myself), what’s done is done and I will likely meet with someone from my insurance company soon to see what the next course of action will be. Boo.
Dinner
Though car problems are awful (why are they always so much more expensive than anticipated!?), dinner was great.
I made simple broiled salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts.
And now all I want is ice cream. A Dairy Queen Blizzard sounds fantastic! Maybe I can convince Ryan to take a little field trip.
Master Bedroom Sneak Peak
Now I’m in the mood to talk about something not related to cars and insurance.
Last week we finally got a mattress for our bed and slowly but surely Ryan and I have been acquiring sheets, pillows and trinkets to adequately outfit our bedroom. I think it will be ready to reveal really soon!
In the mean time, here’s a little sneak peak:
Our color palate for the room is deep teal + silver/gray + black + lime green.
Can’t wait to show you soon! The room has come a long way in just a week.
Annie says
what a fab pillow! i love what i see already 🙂
Lori Kay says
GORGEOUS!!! I love the bedding colors already 🙂
Sorry about your car – I HATE when something happens to my car, so I feel your pain.
Erin says
Aw, Julie, I’m sorry about your mirror. I just knocked mine off this summer and it’s such a horrible feeling. I honestly just duct taped mine back for a while.
But mine was a lot less expensive than I expected. Seriously! Like $60. I would look for the part online or something. They say installing a car mirror isn’t that hard (though I did not do that). Maybe worth a look?
The paint thing is awful! Mine actually looked way worse–as in my mirror was hanging by a wire.
In the future I am going to look for cars with the side mirrors that fold in. They are genius!
peanutbutterfingers says
yeah, i was able to find the mirror online for much cheaper than $500, so i THOUGHT i was going to be in the clear… until the whole REPAINTING fiasco. boo. 🙁
jaci says
not sure what your situation is with the whole mirror part, but I was able to replace my mirror myself for 15 bucks (only the mirror was cracked, not the actual car casing). Not sure if it will be able to save you a little money, but just know you can and it’s much, much cheaper!
Tina says
Sorry about your car Julie!
The bedroom looks great, can’t wait to see more : )
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Oh I totally love the pillows and the color scheme–awesome!!
So sorry about car issues–that bites 🙁 But at least you had a yummy dinner! <—I totally had a similar dinner last night! Salmon and brussels is a great combo!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
I’m so sorry to hear about your car. 🙁 How frustrating!
On a good note though, I LOVE your new colors for your bedroom! Very pretty!
Jessica says
I don’t know if it would work but I had some black smudges on my white car that would not come off with any cleaning solution nor multiple trips to the car wash. One day I decided to try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it worked perfectly. Just another possible suggestion that you could try.
erica says
i’m loving the color combo!!!
can’t wait to see the entire reveal!
sorry about the car! who knew there was liquid in the mirrors?!?! (or maybe it”s just me…girl who knows squat about cars)
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
Such a bummer about the car! Stuff like that is so frustrating!
The bedroom looks nice; can’t wait to see the big reveal!
Sara says
That really stinks about your car, have you tried a magic eraser? I swear those things can get ANYTHING clean. Give it a try it wont hurt.
I love the colors you guys picked out for the room, I’m sure it will look great in the end!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
ah I’m so sorry about your car! But that salmon looks great, and anything involving brussel sprouts would make me feel better!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
LOVE the pillows! So cute!

Sorry to hear about the car! On the bright side, I am LOVING the master bedroom!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
loving that lime green pillow!
so sorry to hear about the car. repair bills stink. majorly.
Kristen @ Chocolate Covered Kristen says
I was trying to fix the flip that holds the driver’s side visor on the way home today and back ended someone… luckily we were going like 10-15mph so all it did was bend his license plate and scratch my front bumper, but I was so mad at myself. Just wasn’t paying attention. I hate it when I make a silly mistake.
Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Muches & Moves says
I love the cool color palette in the bedroom!
kath says
I bet Shaklee Scour Off would take that liquid right off!
Kathleen @ Ocean Full of Lemons says
ohhh can’t wait to see the rest of the bedroom! I love room designs and decorating tips! So far it looks gorgeous!
Nancy @ Beyoutiful Fitstyle says
I’m so into deep teal right now! Recently bought a bed spread for my guest room that’s deep teal, beige, and dark brown. LOVE. Thinking about even doing a teal accent wall. Are you allowed to paint there?
peanutbutterfingers says
unfortunately, no! i wish we could, though!
Sarah says
Love the colors of the room, Julie! Where is the comforter/duvet from?
Melissa R says
Try a magic eraser (that Mr. Clean product) on your car. You would be surprised at how well that works. My husband used it on a white car that had bumper damage. It totally worked. It’s worth a try.
Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile says
Car stuff like that happens to me ALL the time! I take it in for something simple like an oil change and it turns into a $4,000 cost of things that I need to get done immediately. Sorry it happened to you! =/ Cute colors for the room!
Jaime says
Absolutely LOVEEE your bedroom from the sneak peak! Can’t wait to see the final product! You have amazing taste! Sorry to hear about the car =/.
Lisa says
Just wondering why you don’t often have a starch with dinner? I only ask because you are very active and carbs are so important for fueling and refueling. I find personally that I could eat two plates heaped with vegetables and protein but would not feel satiated until swallowing some starch.
peanutbutterfingers says
honestly, i don’t even think about it. neither ryan nor i crave rice or a potato or something at dinnertime. i had pasta last night and we had sweet potatoes + black beans the other night – i guess it just depends on what we’re in the mood to eat at the time.
Kate says
Ugh! Sorry about the car! Last week on my way to work, a rock flew up and cracked my windshield and I ended up pulling over to check on it inevitably making me late for work. I was complaining to my Mom about it later and she said “Well, that 15 minute delay could have saved you from being in a terrible accident so think of it this way, instead of a totaled car and possible injuries you have a cracked windshield. No big deal.”
Moms, they always put things in perspective for ya!
I know, I know, easier said then done and I don’t know if it delayed you a little bit from driving or not but everything happens for a reason. Try to find the good in everything- at least no one was hurt!
(BTW, even as I’m typing this I’m thinking if it was me, I would be a wreck so kudos to you for accepting it and being positive!)
peanutbutterfingers says
that’s is SO true! moms are so wise.
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
I LOVE the round pillow. LOVE. so cute. $1700 is way worse than 5. Mega bummer.
Faith says
So sorry. That is so frustrating. Your bedroom looks great though. Can’t wait to see the whole thing.
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I am SO sorry to hear about your car! As someone who has a 10 year old car I constantly fear something big will break in it and I’ll be SOL. Oh how i can’t wait to graduate from college and get a big girl job!
I love your room color scheme! So pretty! I can’t wait to see it all together!
Joelle (On a Pink Typewriter) says
I love that lime green pillow- gives the bed such a great pop of color and fun..that’s way better to think about than yucky repair costs..
Krystina (Organically Me) says
I LOVE that green pillow! Our bed is brown, bleh, but it was an expensive down comforter so it doesn’t make sense to redo it just yet.
Meg says
Man, what a bummer! 🙁 Totally one of those moments that it would be REALLY nice to hit rewind. Try not to be too hard on yourself, things happen. I hope something will work out for you!
Your bedroom looks like it is coming together beautifully! We just bought a new duvet cover and I’m excited to add it to our room!
hope says
Such a bummer about your car! Have you tried the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to get the liquid that dried off your car? I have a friend that removed black spray paint from her white car with one! It’s worth a try. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
Love the colors you chose for your Master bedroom! Reminds me of the beach. 🙂
Alysha @ShesOnTheRun.com says
LOVE the color palate on your bed. And sorry about the car 🙁 earlier this year I scraped my entire door while leaving the parking garage at work…and yellow paint was all over it. A coworker suggested the magic eraser and it actually worked, all of the yellow paint came off. I don’t think that would help your “drips” but keep the info in the back of your mind!
Nicole G says
Sorry about your car, Julie! I feel your pain. I hate when anything happens to my car. I take it so personally, silly, huh? Love the bedroom colors and that cute flower/ruffle green pillow!!! BTW, did you marinate your salmon or just season it this time? It looks fabulous!
peanutbutterfingers says
just seasoned it w/ garlic salt!
Emily says
So sorry about the mirror and paint fiasco! Can’t wait for the full version of your master bedroom, loved the sneak peek!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Car problems are the worst. I had a “minor” leak at my oil change a few months back and when I went back a couple weeks ago, it’s now a full on power steering rack replacement. They originally quoted me $850 and I was able to get them down to $670 but I still need a second opinion. Cars stink…
Brittney says
That’s so awful about your car, but you’re doing a much better job at staying very positive than I would 🙂
I’ve come so close to taking the mirror off my mom’s car in our garage, those things are an accident waiting to happen!
Nicole says
That does stink about the car. But be sure to factor in IF your insurance rates will go up because you filed a claim. Sometimes it is just better to do what you can out of pocket. I got a new car out of my accident, but our insurance just about doubled for the next 3 years as well.
The Kidless Kronicles
Lindsey says
Ugh that is a bummer with your car! I remember when I backed into someone after only having my new vehicle for a few months after having my old car for almost 10 years! I was annoyed with myself too!
Love the bedroom colors 🙂 And all the fun pillows!
Millie says
If you have power mirrors, the liquid is most likely Ferroelectric liquid crystals. I have heard that acetone might help get rid of the excess that is stuck onto the car. You can pick it up at any hardware store. Try it on an inconspicuous location; if it doesn’t work, no harm is done. If it does, you save yourself some money.
peanutbutterfingers says
thanks for the tip!
Baking Serendipity says
The dark teal is my favorite color! I’ve never thought to pair it with lime green though…gorgeous!
Joe @ The Frolicking Fells says
Don’t beat yourself up about the car situation. Stuff like that happens! Cars are the biggest pains in the butt…I’ve had so many random accidents…you’re not the only one!
We got hit by a drunk driver (Praise God, we weren’t in the car at the time of the accident) and we had a rental car for a good part of a summer in 2009. I went to my mom’s house to mow her grass and as I backed out of her driveway I went pretty close to the house to prevent her lilac bushes from scratching the rental car. In doing so, I hit her house and damaged the bumper to the rental car. That sucked a lot.
Another time, I dropped Sheila off at her law school. As life would have it, this was the last time ever that I would need to take her there. I had dropped her off and picked her up hundreds of times with no problem. Well, this time, I backed out of the driveway and wound up dislodging my front bumper on the rock placed next to the driveway. Of course, it was raining, and I got nice and dirty tying the bumper to the frame of the car so I could make it home OK.
peanutbutterfingers says
oh no! yes, car problems are awful – but i’m SO glad you weren’t in the car that was hit by the drunk driver.
Colleen @ Jimmy Choos on the Treadmill says
Cars are such a headache! Hopefully the next estimate won’t be as steep!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Love that color combination! So sorry about the car, that stuff is so annoying to deal with 🙁
Lena @ Fit on the Rocks says
I’m loving the look! It sucks what happened to your car. The heater in mine is currently not working, and it’s fall/winter in Denver…woohoo …
Khushboo says
Sorry about your car: it sucks when they present you with a big fat cheque.
Khushboo says
Sorry my mind is all over the place..that should have said bill, not cheque..I would welcome a big fat cheque 🙂
Daniella says
Have you tried using car clay for the gunk on the side of your car? My boyfriend had a similar problem that they told him would be expensive to take care of and he was able to get it off with the clay for around $40. Might be worth a shot?
Jenny Langham says
Wow what dripped out of the mirrors?!?! weird.
peanutbutterfingers says
i think it was something to make the mirrors not fog up…
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
Hey Julie!!
I have been looking for sheets JUST like yours…if you don’t mind me asking, where are they (the gray patterned ones) from? I am dying to find some that match my grey duvet and teal bedspread!!
peanutbutterfingers says
target! i just got them this week, too!
Debbie says
Hehe, looove the photo and caption!! You’re just way too funny Juiie!
