Our Wedding Kiss

October 30, 2012 by Julie 121 Comments

Writing our wedding recap posts a month or so after Ryan and I exchanged vows allowed me to relive one of the best days of my life. I broke down the recaps to cover what I felt were the most memorable and special moments of the day, but naturally a lot of memories went undocumented.

Like the memory of our wedding kiss.

You would think looking back on our wedding kiss would evoke feelings of romance and love, but when Ryan and I think back on our wedding kiss, we laugh. And we laugh hard.

022_Bride&Groom

A couple of weeks after our wedding, Ryan and I were sitting on the couch talking about random memories from that special day.

Then, out of nowhere, Ryan said, “So, about our wedding kiss…”

I looked at him with hesitation and then started cracking up.

“YOUR HANDS!!” I laughed. “What were you doing with your hands!? How have we not talked about this yet!?!?”

Ryan then started talking a mile a minute, explaining that during our ceremony he was excited and his head was spinning, so when our pastor said, “You may now kiss the bride,” his mind was all over the place and he thought he should touch my face or something.

“But you never touch my face! I usually have my hands around your neck and your hands are almost always around my waist!” I said.

Why not use a wedding ceremony as a place to change it up, ya know? Winking smile

You can almost see his indecision in the pictures…

047_Ceremony048_Ceremony

Ahhh!

Ryan and I look at all of our other wedding pictures and smile, but we laugh when we look at our wedding kiss pictures.

When we shared this story with our families, they assured us that no one had any idea our kiss was anything out of the ordinary for us, but it has turned into one of my favorite wedding memories because of the fact that both Ryan and I were likely thinking, “What the heck is going on!?!?” during one of the most romantic moments of our wedding ceremony.

Now, whenever a couple asks us for wedding day advice, we tell them to practice their wedding day kiss!

Question of the Afternoon

Hahaha ohhhh this made me laugh so much! Being very newly married I was sooo happy that we did a wedding rehearsal the day before BUT our kiss at the rehearsal was so awkward that I thought the day of was going to be ridiculous! Thankfully we pulled it together for the actual moment. My groom did however start to put my wedding ring on and then panicked when he saw my engagement ring on the other hand, took my wedding ring back off and then dropped it! It was so funny!! Ohhhh awkward moments. The best!!

We got married on an outdoor balcony at the Grand Floridian Hotel in Disney World.. just me, him , a JP and a photographer. He dropped my ring and it rolled across the floor toward the dropoff edge. And he managed to pick it up before it got there… I still tease him that he tried to get out of marrying me by throwing my ring away!

    Your pics are lovely.

There was a show on TLC about a year ago called “American Virgins” or something like that, and one couple hadn’t even kissed before their wedding. The groom came at the bride and the word “Anteater” springs to mind. (Available for your viewing pleasure on youtube!)

Still the most disturbing wedding moment I’ve ever witnessed, and I wasn’t even there!

This is an adorable story. 🙂

I just got married on Saturday!!—and I so empathize with Ryan’s wedding nerves. During our cake cutting, no one had really showed us how to cut it, and I wasn’t thinking it would be up so high—I had to lift my arm up a lot. Well, I ended up accidentally cutting off basically half the cake, and it tumbled off the plate heading for the table! I somewhow miraculously grabbed a plate and it plopped onto it, but it was a close one—all of our guests burst out laughing!

I LOVE that wedding story! One that my husband and I always laugh about is crying during the ceremony. We always argue about who started it, and of course … it was him! There’s even this great picture of the whole wedding party gathered in the church directly following the ceremony – Dan is trying to say I started it, and everyone is yelling “no” and pointing at him. 🙂

I just got married in August and the most awkward thing that happened was during the ceremony. The wind really picked up and blew my veil straight up and it got stuck in the arch! My sister/MOH had to get it out. I couldn’t stop laughing and neither could my husband. So many people got pictures of it. Funniest part..the exact same thing happened to my mother on her and my dad’s wedding day. They’ve been married 30 years so I’m taking it as a good omen 🙂

I agree with your advice! I never thought to talk to my husband about our kiss, but I wish I would have. When it came time to kiss I was expecting more of a romantic kiss but my husband just gave me a super quick peck on the lips. When I asked him about it, he said he didn’t want to have a long kiss in front of his family (he’s kind of shy about any public affection). I’m surprised our photographer was able to get a picture of it, it happened so fast!

We had a small, immediate-family only, outdoor ceremony. A massive summer thunderstorm was looming, the wind was whipping, and quite obviously, I was full of excited nerves!! The preacher starts going through the motions of the ceremony, and I thought he had skipped a part so I leaned in and whispered it to him, and he politely told me all was good. The funniest part was when I leaned in to whisper to him, everyone in the audience also leaned in, all holding their breath, trying to hear me….like I was going to be a runaway bride or something! 🙂 My husband and all our family laugh about it to this day!

So, my hubs and I got married in a civil ceremony in April (shh don’t tell, we are still planning a big wedding for July 2013) but the best part of that day in April was that we chose to get married on a cliff overlooking Two Jack Lake in Banff, Alberta. As soon as we kissed, we turned around for some pictures and realized we got hitched right next to a big pile of mountain goat poop. ohhhhhhh shi*t. 🙂

That is tooo funny about your wedding kiss. I have to laugh when I think of my wedding kiss with my husband too. We got married in a very conservative church in front of a very conservative crowd (mostly my husband’s family) and during our meetings with the pastor before the wedding, he stressed to be quick and “appropriate” during our kiss. They don’t even say “you may kiss the bride” because it is not part of the hymnal’s ceremony.

Anyways, I guess we were both really concerned about making people mad so we had the SHORTEST peck of a wedding kiss in the history of weddings. I am shocked we even had a picture of the fleeting moment. We definitely snicker every time it comes up. AWKWARD!!!!

At our wedding, my now husband couldn’t get the wedding ring on my finger. It took him at least 30 seconds to get it on there. Everyone was cracking up! Another part of the Indian ceremony is when the groom puts a special necklace on the bride (it’s what signifies marriage in the Indian culture). Well, the hook thing was so small that he couldn’t figure it out with everything I was wearing. My best friend had to come on stage and help him! It was so funny and so us!

We got married in the Catholic church – we didn’t even have a first kiss during the ceremony! When it didn’t happen at our rehearsal, I just thought it was because that would, like, make it “official.” Umm, I was not thrilled, that’s for sure! So I always tell couples: ASK about the first kiss during the rehearsal!

Your pictures totally made me laugh! 🙂

Back to the point, I suddenly didn’t know what to do with my hands (usually they’re on his chest because I’m too short to reach his neck) but maybe the 4″ wedding shoes got to me and my arms were suddenly, weirdly on top of his shoulders? Like, as if I was going to hoist myself up or something? So weird. I corrected it for a second quick kiss, but only have one photo of that one. Haha

Our wedding kiss was hysterical. My stepdad performed our ceremony and I was a ball of nerves and emotion the entire time (which was about 10 minutes). He pronounced us husband and wife and without thinking about it, I just went in for the kiss without him saying “kiss the bride”. It was pretty hilarious at the moment and one of my favorite memories of our wedding ceremony.

I’m getting married in Nov 2013, but I’ve been to lots of weddings so I have 2 funny stories that stick out. One friend’s sister (a bridesmaid) fainted during the ceremony and somehow, her dad in the front row saw it happening and caught her from slamming into the ground! It was awkward to move on from for a few minutes. The other wedding was a friend of mine and during the ceremony, the pastor’s message to the couple kept including the word “divorce”. He must have said it at least 30 times throughout the ceremony and it was SO WEIRD. I was too afraid to ask her about it in case she thought it was ok, so I just kept my feelings to myself. =)

I was so sick on our wedding day we almost cancelled the ceremony and let the reception go on as a “postponed wedding shindig” (with me absent). (I actually had salmonella poisoning from a “quick lunch out” the day before )
We decided the show must go on … Hubby’s dad is a doctor so he had me on IV and injected me with anti-nauseant med stematil.
    I was TRIPPIN!
    Stoned out of my gourd.
(Remeber 16Candles bride who took the pain pills…she was composed compared to me!)
They had to bring me a chair to sit on during the ceremony … And I kept dozing off.
When it was time to kiss Gareth, the eternal joker said “NO FREAKING WAY!!!” And I flipped him the bird!
Very few wewdding pix were taken as I got sicker and spent my wedding night in the hospital (aparantly the reception was a blast…I’ve seen the video of it.

SO now when we go to weddings and they say “kiss the bride” we always kiss … And people we know know why we are kissing…others wonder why we are making out!

After the actual proposal, our photographer friend took some pictures of us and I felt so silly kissing my fiance in front of both our sets of parents and posing for pictures that way. I got over it after a couple shots, but I just remembered thinking, “Ok Chelsea, if it’s okay for you to be engaged, it’s probably okay to kiss Shane in front of your dad now.”

It’s so funny that you talk about practicing the kiss! Last month my (then) fiancé and I decided as we were leaving our rehearsal dinner, we would practice our kiss (since we wouldn’t be seeing each other again until I walked down the aisle). It was great because we wound up with a Dip/Kiss and it was perfect because it expressed just how excited we were in that moment (though, I was afraid that in the process of dipping me he would drop me!).

Oh I’ve got a good one for you. My husband is Jewish so we incorporated Jewish traditions throughout the wedding. At the reception, we did the whole put the bride and groom up on a chair. I was nervous about this, but my friend assured me she’s been to tons of jewish weddings and has never seen anyone fall….

After being up there for maybe 30 seconds, our drunk friends hoisted me further upward and OUT and I fell OFF the chair! Luckily I landed on my feet and my dress didn’t rip or anything… but it was scary!

Needless to say, when our friends put the chair back and motioned for me to sit in it and go up again I said NO WAY. My friend felt like she jinxed me by saying she’s never seen anyone fall!

I kept saying we needed to practice our kiss half joking, half serious. We never did and we were both frazzled when the minister said “you may now kiss the bride.” We knew it was coming but you know what I mean about that awkward moment when he says it. I ended up with my hands on my husband’s face which I never do, and I’m not sure where his hands ended up because the photographer only got a photo from elbows up. So, I don’t really know what the crowd saw 🙂
