Our Wedding Kiss

October 30, 2012 by Julie 121 Comments

Writing our wedding recap posts a month or so after Ryan and I exchanged vows allowed me to relive one of the best days of my life. I broke down the recaps to cover what I felt were the most memorable and special moments of the day, but naturally a lot of memories went undocumented.

Like the memory of our wedding kiss.

You would think looking back on our wedding kiss would evoke feelings of romance and love, but when Ryan and I think back on our wedding kiss, we laugh. And we laugh hard.

022_Bride&Groom

A couple of weeks after our wedding, Ryan and I were sitting on the couch talking about random memories from that special day.

Then, out of nowhere, Ryan said, “So, about our wedding kiss…”

I looked at him with hesitation and then started cracking up.

“YOUR HANDS!!” I laughed. “What were you doing with your hands!? How have we not talked about this yet!?!?”

Ryan then started talking a mile a minute, explaining that during our ceremony he was excited and his head was spinning, so when our pastor said, “You may now kiss the bride,” his mind was all over the place and he thought he should touch my face or something.

“But you never touch my face! I usually have my hands around your neck and your hands are almost always around my waist!” I said.

Why not use a wedding ceremony as a place to change it up, ya know? Winking smile

You can almost see his indecision in the pictures…

047_Ceremony048_Ceremony

Ahhh!

Ryan and I look at all of our other wedding pictures and smile, but we laugh when we look at our wedding kiss pictures.

When we shared this story with our families, they assured us that no one had any idea our kiss was anything out of the ordinary for us, but it has turned into one of my favorite wedding memories because of the fact that both Ryan and I were likely thinking, “What the heck is going on!?!?” during one of the most romantic moments of our wedding ceremony.

Now, whenever a couple asks us for wedding day advice, we tell them to practice their wedding day kiss!

That is hilarious! As you know, during your wedding you just do everything you are instructed to do. At our wedding, our priest forgot to tell us to kiss so we never did. We were about to walk back down the aisle and my sister yelled out something about us not kissing. Our picture is my husband kissing me and I look like I’m pulling away because I wasn’t ready for it. We laugh about it too.
One awkward thing I witnessed at a wedding was the priest saying the wrong name when saying the vows. He got the groom right but said the wrong name for the bride. Turns out he had married the brides sister a few months before and said the bride’s sister’s name, but I didn’t know it at the time.

I’m not “newly” married, but very happily still after 13 years. One (but not the only) awkward moment at our wedding, was when we went to light our Unity Candle. We had taken time and thought to choose the right candle, asked the florist to create and arrangement around it, picked a song to use at that time… you get the idea. Then, during the ceremony as we are having this moment of “two becoming one,” I look at it and declare, “This isn’t our candle?!” My husband says, “Nope. Just keep on lighting it.” And of course the photographer captured that perfect look on my face of “What the…?” Turns out, the florist forgot to bring it to the church so they just grabbed an extra candle from the back of the church. No big deal but sort of relaxed things for me and I followed my husbands “Go with the flow” advice. Still flowing :)…

I like the color of these shoes in your post. What are your thoughts on Reebok? They have some eye-catching colors on their kicks. After seeing the Reebok Ziglite commercial with Jordin Sparks, Lil Rel, and Ruben Studdard I am definitely going to grab me a pair ASAP. I couldn’t stop laughing at this outtakes video of the trio http://bit.ly/ZigOuttakes

I went to a wedding where the pastor never told us to sit down after the bride walked down the aisle, so all the guests just stood throughout the entire ceremony. Everyone kept looking around wondering why we were all standing up, but no one would sit down….it was akward….

My husband is still mad at me for our wedding kiss! Ok, maybe he’s gotten over it… we DID practice, but in the moment I ended up with my hand on his shoulder in some sort of death-grip and it looks like I’m trying to push him away while he’s slightly dipping me… oops! He also tried to tell me (while the JP was talking) that there was someone in the trees behind us… it turned out to be the second photographer trying to get some shots.

Although the funniest part had to be about 30 seconds after our kiss, hearing a voice yell “FORE!” and hearing a golf ball crash through the trees right where our ceremony was!

Haha, that’s too funny! My husband and I started swaying in opposite directions during our first dance, so we basically tripped on each other, giving all of our guests (and ourselves) a good laugh. My photographer captured the moment on camera, and I actually just noticed the picture (we had so many to go through) when I wrote my wedding reception post for tomorrow!

Too funny! We recently were married, October 6th, and had practiced our kiss prior to the ceremony. It seems like something so natural and you do it all the time right?! Even with the practice, we were so caught up in the moment that it didn’t go at all as planned. We have yet to see the professional photos, but the few we’ve seen look like I’m smashing my face into my husbands and he’s scared or something! Ah, at least we can laugh about it and know we’re not the only ones with awkward first kiss photos 🙂

Oh my gosh. Our wedding was full of awkward moments but that’s what made is very “us.”
    1. We walked down the aisle to the Top Gun theme and people were confused/ laughing.
    2. We weren’t sure what to do with our hands, so we stood their awkwardly for awhile until I made him hold my hand.
    3. My dad officiated the ceremony and a fly kept flying into his face and landing on his head. Of course I swatted it off for him. 4. My dad’s papers kept blowing in the wind so I held those down so he could read them.
    5. I cried, my dad cried, we needed to pull it together. To do this, my dad turned around and started saying his “script” to the pond instead of the audience.
    6. When it was time for the rings, my husband put mine on backwards and I called him out on it in front of everyone. Whoops!

It was a ridiculous 10 minutes that I will never forget and get to relive anytime I want thanks to YouTube!

Isn’t this running weather the best? I live in Jacksonville and I would rather run in the cold any day than worry about passing out from heat exhaustion! The only problem is that I have such a difficult time getting out of bed in the mornings knowing it is cold outside and it is so warm under the covers.

I love the look of all your bridesmaids in your wedding photo – they are all stretching to see you guys. So sweet!

You guys are absolutely adorable! I love it! Happy anniversary!

We got married on September 2, and my sister stepped in totally last minute to officiate (nothing like a little “halfway through the rehearsal find out the officiant is bailing” to get the nerves going!) and bless her heart literally had less than 24 hours to prepare. Everything was amazing until the exchange of rings/I-do’s which got totally flubbed up! We still don’t know who said what and if we really said “I-do” We can’t wait for the video!

We know that eventually we put rings on each other, were laughing hysterically and at the end of it I said “wait, did we do that right?” and Wilson said “we’re good!.” My sister felt terrible, but I wouldn’t want it any other way! The pictures of the moment are some of the best from the day as they perfectly capture our lighthearted nature and sheer joy of getting married.

On our wedding day (9 years ago!) I was so revved up that I gave the wrong rings to the best man and my maid-of-honor. She tried to correct me, but I just brushed her off. During the ceremony, when we realized what happened, we just smiled/laughed and faked it, putting my ring on my husband and his ring on me. After the ceremony, we had the photographer take pictures of the real deal, and nobody knew! It was almost like an extra blessing, wearing each others rings for a few minutes.

Hahaha this is a fantastic story!

My best friend from childhood got married this past June, and she’s convinced she never wants kids (we’ll see if she’s still singing the same tune in 5-7 years when everyone else from her group of high school friends–all of which got married this summer–have kids). During the ceremony the pastor said something about God blessing her and her husband with kids or something like that and my friend was like, “NO! WE ARE NEVER HAVING KIDS!” during the middle of the ceremony haha.

This made me laugh so hard! Isn’t it funny how no matter how “rehearsed” your ceremony may be, something awkward happens? For my ceremony, our officiant forgot to announce that we were starting to say our vows. I was going first, so I took him aside and was like “uh, can you like announce it?” so I didn’t just have to start talking out of no where, but instead of saying something normal he said “And now, here’s the important part!” And that was his introduction to our vows… Our kiss was also awkward in that I kissed my husband twice. We had one kiss and then it was like I went back for seconds. Oh, wedding jitters!

    I loved your story!

There were a few awkward moments at my wedding as well. First, one of the buttons on my dress came off right before the wedding was to start. Luckily, a quilting group was meeting at the church at the time so one of the women was able to sew it back on. The second thing that happened was my brother-in-law, who was the best man, fainted and fell on a cast iron advent wreath (we were married New Year’s Eve). Even though it was horrible at the time, we now joke that by passing out, he was able to stop the pastor from continuing a long sermon. 🙂

    Congrats on your anniversary!
