Random Musings from Friendsgiving Prep

November 2, 2012 by Julie 98 Comments

After working through the morning, I closed up shop around noon to head out to do some grocery shopping for our Friendsgiving party tomorrow. I went to two different stores, headed home and got to work in the kitchen!

My mother-in-law is the queen of hosting big brunches around the holidays and always does a ton of prep work the night before. I am copying her today and trying to get as much done before tomorrow so we won’t have a ton on our plate after our race in the morning.

Since my day has been a little abnormal, I’ve been feeling all over the place, so this blog post is going to be all over the place too as I share some random musings that popped into my head throughout Friendsgiving prep this afternoon:

  • I hate cooking bacon.

burned bacon

The grease burns me. I burn the bacon. There’s just a lot of burning going on.

  • Burned bacon is a delicacy in Dog World.

Dog begging for bacon

All I said was “sit” and Sadie went through every trick in her arsenal in 1.5 seconds to get me to hand over that piece of burned bacon.

  • Pandora needs a Thanksgiving station.

I ended up cooking to Pandora’s Destiny’s Child station and tearing bread for stuffing to the tune of “Bootylicious.” I think the Pandora Thanksgiving station should be totally cheesy and feature a whole bunch of songs that say “thank you.”

Like “Thank You For Being a Friend” from The Golden Girls or Alanis Morissette’s “Thank You. ”

And the Pandora Thanksgiving station would have exactly one listener: Me.

  • Cooking makes me ridiculously thirsty.

  • It is impossible to break apart two loaves of bread for stuffing without eating every third piece and yet all I want for dinner is stuffing… and pumpkin pie.

Question of the Afternoon

  • What is something that should be ridiculously easy to cook or bake that you just cannot seem to master?

i, like you, used to hate cooking bacon. Try to cook in oven on the disposable broiler pans. Crispy perfect bacon every time and you never hurt yourself. It’s awesome.

I have an eggpoacher that you use in microwave…30seconds boom done.
Use the evap milk in coffee or macanccheese…or any recipe that calls for milk to use it up.

I hate baking as the back of my oven is hotter than the front so I have to constantly rotate the pans.

I adore the Golden Girls and belt the song whenever it comes on! I actually have Season 1 of it on my wish list for Christmas. And my family has always just made our bacon in the microwave. For us (we like crispier bacon), it comes out perfectly. I’m sure if you wanted it fattier or even crispier you could adjust the cooking times. But am I the only person who is not a fan of stuffing?…

I am totally with ya on the Thanksgiving Pandora station…much needed, being ridiculously thirsty while cooking…always! And not having the ability to say no to every third piece of bread while breaking it up for whatever recipe 😉 Hope you have a fun “Friendsgiving!”

I tried putting on a Halloween station on…(duh!) Halloween, and it was horrible. I don’t know what they thought the concept of Halloween was, but I’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with pop artists!!

I HATE ( all caps!) cooking bacon!!! On the weekends, my husband and I love to slow down and actually make a big breakfast and of course bacon is his number one request!! It usually has him running in the kitchen every 2 minutes due to the shrill screams!! I always feel like I’m being attacked!! Definitely going to try the oven next time!

Rice. It is a long running joke in my family that I can make incredible time consuming, in-depth dishes, but I cannot make rice to save my life.

I have taken to baking my bacon (ha ha). I used to work in a restaurant and that’s how they cooked it, so I took the idea home.

Happy Friendsgiving!! I hope you have a great day. I have a silly question for you. Where did you get the metal pumpkin holding the tea light in the picture with the bread for the stuffing? It is so cute and I need/want one badly. LOL. Take care and have a great weekend.

Easiest, mess-free way to cook bacon perfectly every time: Line a microwaveable plate with paper towel. Place bacon strips on it, making sure not to overlap bacon. Lay a paper towel on top of the bacon (to limit the bacon grease lining the inside of your microwave) and cook for 60 seconds and then start watching to make sure you don’t burn it. Take it out just before you think it’s done. (Each microwave is different with respect to how long it takes. Another variable is how many slices of bacon you’re cooking.) It’s never chewy or rubbery. Perfect every time.

French toast!!! I’ve tried many times and it never taste right. It always seems really like the egg just cooks right in the bread. It’s one of my favorite breakfast meals but I gave up making it. Yours always look so perfect and yummy 🙂

Try this! No frying, no grease!

    Spiced Bacon Twists
    1/4 packed brown sugar
    1-1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
    1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/8 teaspoons ground nutmeg
    Dash of cayenne pepper
    10 center cut Bacon strips
*combine the first five ingredients, rub over bacon on both sides. Twist bacon, place on a rack in a 15in X 10in x 1in. baking pan.
Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes or until firm; bake longer if desired.
