Revisiting an Old Favorite

January 13, 2015 by Julie 71 Comments

Good morning to you! I am going to need all the energy I can get today because I have two indoor cycling classes on my agenda before 10 a.m.

keiser spin bike

Luckily I’m done teaching my first class for the day (I am seriously in love with my 6 a.m. crew — they are so much fun!), so I only have one remaining. I’m subbing for a Sculpt ‘n’ Spin class at 9 a.m and the class format should be a neat one to teach because half of the workout is dedicated to cycling and the remaining 30 minutes will be spent off the bike, focusing on strength training. I’m just filling in for the regular instructor for today, but I’m looking forward to teaching something new!

Breakfast

During my morning class today, I joked with our group about how I always find myself brainstorming breakfast ideas during the last 15 to 20 minutes of any morning workout. (When I’m teaching, however, my mind doesn’t wander too much!) The class then started shouting out their own breakfast ideas and I’m pretty sure we all drooled through the climb during that little game.

One woman said she had protein pancakes on her mind this morning and that inspired me to revisit an old favorite…

egg white oatmeal protein pancake

My super simple egg white and oatmeal protein pancake! Gosh, I love this recipe so darn much.

I added a big scoop of Teddie peanut butter to the egg white and oatmeal mixture today to give the pancake a little more staying power and stirred everything around before cooking it up in a skillet. The peanut butter was a great addition and definitely kicked the flavor up a notch. I topped the pancake with maple syrup and enjoyed it with a side of hot tea.

Now it’s time to get rolling and head back out to the gym. My gym work day is going to be cut a little short today and I have plans to bring Caitlin dinner and meet her sweet baby Claire for the first time later this afternoon. Can’t wait!

Question of the Morning

  • What are some of the most random things you think about during your workouts?

I do a lot of random meal planning during my workouts… Working out and dreaming about food… Sounds about right! Haha! During morning workouts, I also find myself thinking about the day’s to-do lists but I really try to keep myself in the zone (especially during Pure Barre because I’ll get lost if I don’t!).

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I’m usually thinking about food …..especially when I’m doing longer runs I think about what I’m going to eat immediately afterwards. Ha! Or sometimes I see someone in class with a cute workout wardrobe and I daydream about clothes! Very profound thinking over here! 🙂

Ah, the joys of early morning workouts… I workout at 6AM and I am ALWAYS daydreaming of breakfast. When I’m doing a particularly grueling WOD, I get out of my head by thinking about what I’m going to chow down on when it’s over. 🙂

I think about food, but I do that even when I’m not working out. I was actually thinking about putting up new shades in our house and washing the windows in the house because they are dirty and need it.

When I am teaching a class I tend to focus on the class itself, but if I am working out alone I focus on ideas and brainstorming- same when I am running. I try and let my mind just wander, but that is usually where it goes.

What’s nice is that since starting CrossFit, my mind doesn’t wander as much during my workout. i’m more focused on that moment and getting through the intense workout. When I run though my mind definitely wanders to what I may eat later, what I need to do with the rest of my day, how my body is feeling, what’s been happening in my life recently, what I want to do with the rest of it…all sorts of things!

I think about being at my goal weight in a year – though I guess that’s not too random since it’s while exercising.
I often think about chores or other things I need to do when I get home after work, and end up planning it all out in intense detail. First I’m going to take off my shoes, then put a pot on to boil, then have something to drink…..

I think about food and to-do lists a lot when working out. When I’m running long without music, I get random songs stuck in my head on a loop – super random, like Christmas songs and children’s songs I haven’t thought about in years.

When I’m working out on my own, I am typically thinking of similar things you said…food, food, food, and life to-do’s. 😉 But when I’m teaching, I naturally just zone into my class and the workout, and I absolutely love it. It’s like I can just forget about all the worries of the world for that one hour. I’ve come into class to teach a few times worried that I wouldn’t be able to focus because various things were on my mind, but as soon as that music starts, it’s like I just forget about it.

That pancake sounds delicious! I’ll need to try that one! Mixing in peanut butter is aaaalways a good idea. 😉

I do love eggs, granola/yogurt, and fruit, so I usually have some combo of that. i do always drink my recovery protein/milk drink on the way home, so I’m never starving when I choose 🙂

My mind wanders so much when I’m teaching – thanks to all the mirrors! I notice what so many people are doing in the other areas of the gym and who walks by the studio. I also think of food a lot, looking forward to my next meal. Also general things like what’s going on throughout the week, how sweaty / tired I am, etc. When I’m training, I usually let myself think of things that get me fired up to work harder – if it’s stress I’m dealing with, or situations which frustrate me. LOL.
I’m now definitely going to have a protein pancake for dinner tonight – thanks!!

It generally depends on my workout and how intense it is/mental thought it takes. If I am running in the mornings I am almost always thinking about the things I need to do that day while simultaneously watching one of my favorite shows on my iPad. However with other workouts, it takes all my effort to simply get the workout done haha!

I just made my return to high intensity classes last night (rehabbing my knee with lots of Pure Barre), and it’s the same format as your 9am class! We call it Bike Boot Camp, and it’s 30 miserable minutes of spin (obviously cardio is what I NEED because I hate it) followed by 25 minutes of strength training and then a good stretch. We did a Seahawks/Kam Chancellor inspired workout, doing 31 reps of every exercise to honor the #31 player as well as the 31 points scored against the Panthers. We used only body weight, but it seriously hurts to walk today.

During the workout I was wishing we were honoring our QB Russell Wilson instead by doing 3 reps of everything instead of 31!

I also ‘window shop’ while working out. I see so many great workout pieces and ask where they’re from if there isn’t an obvious brand label visible. Then if I hit a milestone (like 13 PB classes in a row), I buy myself something special. My new fave are the Splits59 Kym tights in red. LOVE!!

Today was my second day shadowing as a coach at a local gym and since it is Tabata Tuesday, I was in charge of all the cues to call out. When I just went with it it was fine, but when I started concentrating too hard and wondering if I would mess up, I felt panicked. It’s always more nerve wracking when it’s not your own class and on some level you are being judged by the main coach. I definitely think I did a good job though and am looking forward to teaching my own classes in the coming weeks!
