If there is a more energetic dog breed out there than a vizsla, I have yet to encounter it in my lifetime.
That is Sadie after our five-mile run this morning.
I’ve heard Australian shepherds and German shorthaired pointers are extremely high energy as well, which is kind of funny because they are two breeds that Ryan and I also adore.
Ryan and I have said that if we got another dog that wasn’t a vizsla we’d love to rescue a German shorthaired pointer (they look so much like vizslas but with a darker coat) and if it weren’t for my allergies, we probably would’ve got an Australian shepherd when we were initially looking for a dog. (I also adore French bulldogs and Boston terriers, but Ryan isn’t on board for a small dog. Maybe one day!)
It wasn’t until we started researching breeds that often don’t affect allergies that we stumbled upon the vizsla and became quite the smitten kittens.
And now I have the best running buddy that can knock out five miles like it ain’t no thang.
When we arrived home from our run this morning, Ryan was still at the gym, so Sadie scoured the house on overdrive searching for him in every room before realizing that he wasn’t home yet.
Then I became her default playtime buddy… even though we just ran five miles.
We played on the floor for a good 10 minutes as I solidified my campaign to be her favorite.
Breakfast
Random fact: Whenever I start to type out the word “breakfast” I always type “Bream” first. I guess letting go of my maiden name is still a daily battle!
Breakfast today was an egg sandwich served with a sliced Ambrosia apple that was half the size of my face.
I made the egg sandwich the usual way with two fried eggs, a slice of muenster cheese and strawberry jelly served atop a toasted whole wheat English muffin.
I have yet to try a cheese on this sandwich that I like more than muenster. It’s perfecto.
A cup of pumpkin spice Godiva coffee was also enjoyed on the side.
I finished off this particular bag of coffee this morning. Sad day.
I’ve been rationing this coffee since the fall because I like it so much. Fall coffee drinks are the best of the year!
Ryan and I have some food-related fun on the agenda for today, but I’m crossing my fingers that it doesn’t rain! We’re hoping to make it out to a barbeque competition and eat some of the best barbeque in Florida today assuming the weather cooperates which looks a little shaky at the moment.
Hope you have a fantastic Saturday!
Diane says
That coffee is the best!! When you posted about it in the fall, I ran out to find some and was hooked. I still have half a bag that I save for special “me” times (so glad the hubs doesn’t care for it). I’m going to hoard it next year so that I have an endless supply. Happy Saturday!
Khushboo says
That Godiva coffee looks divine- perfect Saturday morning treat 🙂

i should’ve stocked up! i LOVE it.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
when you said that sadie “scoured the house on overdrive searching for him in every room”, i started laughing so hard because that’s exactly what our yellow lab does when he doesn’t see my husband walk in the door with me. sometimes my husband will hide from our dogs in the shower or in the closet, so they always think he’s hiding from them, even if he’s not actually home!
i agree – muenster cheese is the BEST on egg sandwiches!! actually it’s my favorite cheese in general. 😉
peanutbutterfingers says
HA! this made me laugh out loud. sometimes ryan will hide from sadie when we take her to the dog park and while she runs around trying to find him, i’ll go hide, so it’s an endless cycle. it cracks us up!
Dani Sticka @ Run Daniella Run! says
That is so funny about Sadie, my best friend has a yellow lab who runs with her 4-5 times a week and he is the same way! He just has so much energy, luckily his mama keeps him super active. I have a pug who is a ball of energy…for about 3-5 minutes then finds her bed and takes a nap LOL! But she’s awesome with my kiddos!
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
People often say to me, “he’s running around like crazy, you’re going to have to carry him home” when I’m out on a long off leash walk with Teddy. Nope, he has yet to EVER run out of energy!
Yellow Haired Girl says
Coffee flavours purposed for fall are the best!!
Sabrina says
My boyfriend works at Starbucks so I am always stocking up on my favorite coffees of the season. It’s the only way to live!!
Becca says
Haha our dogs are the complete opposite 🙂 Jackson could win an award for laziest dog! I am a HUGE fan of summer coffee flavors, coconut is the beat! Followed by Spring Blend from Whole Foods.
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I was never a small dog person, but when I lived on my own in my first apartment, I adopted a pug figuring that would be best for a small apartment. He is THE BEST! Now, since getting married, my husband is obsessed with him too, even though he’s a big dog person too! He’s a little dog, but he definitely has a BIG personality! We plan on adding a big dog to our family though once we get a house!
Brekke says
I have 2 Boston Terriers and they are a trip!! We decided on Boston’s because I think they’re different than most “small dogs” but they do have a lot of energy!! I always want people to get Bostons!! 🙂
Sara says
I love Bostons. I always tell people to get them too, especially my mom!
Kristin says
Agreed!!! I would never have a dog other than a Boston Terrier! They break the mold on the stereotypical “small dog”–they have full of personality, affection, spunk, and energy. Go Bostons and you’ll never go back! 🙂
Alyssa @ fit and fun in third says
I’m so jealous of your running buddy! When we move out of our apartment and get a dog I need to make sure his energy levels are up to par with Sadie’s! 🙂
Heather@Just a Colorado Gal says
Ha, yeah, I have an Australian Cattle Dog and although I love her to pieces, her energy can be exhausting sometimes! I finally have trained her to run next to my bike so she can gets her workout that way 🙂 But the training took some serious effort– and quite a few crashes when she saw rabbits!
Sara says
I love german short hairs coloring, so pretty. My fiance wasn’t on board for a small yappy lap dog, but compromised with a Boston Terrier :). Bostons can do everything a big dog can do but have the added benefit of portability. We also ended up rescuing a big dog recently, a boxer mix (we might do one of those tests to see what else she is mixed with just out of curiosity!)
Mokzan says
Border terrier is also a high energy breed, they are also very funny =)
Melissa R says
We have a German Short Hair Pointer. Such a great dog and really good with my young boys (3 and 6). Super fast runner, crazy fast.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
In a perfect allergy free world, (b/c long haired dogs kill me w/ the allergy thing too) I’d have a weimaraner, vizsla, and pointer. My 3 absolute favorite breeds. I’d also likely loose my mind from the craziness. My parents have a pointer (I grew up with one too) and when we bring Ginger to their house the insanity is just well…insane.
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
what a fun food filled day!! i walked the dogs (labs) for 4.5 miles this morning and then they proceeded to chase each other in circles around the backyard for an hour. you would think they hadn’t had exercise in 3 weeks.
Jill @ Jill is Active says
I’ve been wanting a dog for SO long now that I can run with. My parents have always had little dogs which I adore but I want a dog that can keep up with me for long runs!! One day 🙂
Amanda @ Click. The Good News says
My vizsla Mia just ran 11 miles with me this AM. I ran 11, she probably ran twice that since she’s off leash about half the time. I could tell she wasn’t as peppy near the end,but she kept on going with a smile and a wag. I made breakfast tacos for my post-run treat.
Tara says
We have a 3 year old weimaraner who is nuts but I love her! Reminds me a lot of Sadie, endless energy and always wanting to play. We’ll run her 10 miles in the morning, take her hiking in the afternoon and she’s still doing laps around the yard at dinner!
Kaelin says
We have a 7 year old cattle dog/Belgium malinois mix. She is insanely active and has maintained her puppy like energy level through her adult hood. We do lots of walks, hikes, runs, and swims to keep her from going stir crazy. Any “working” dog (herding, hunting, etc) is meant to have a job, so we try to give her one everyday.
That egg sandwich looks delicious!!!
Kate @ The Little Spoon Blog says
Ever since I have started reading your blog I have become obsessed with Sadie and wanted a vizsla! I tell my boyfriend frequently that my top 3 facorites are goldendoodles, vizslas and Weimaraner. One day!

Also another energetic breed… Weimaraners! I think they may be related to Viszlas.

Ha ha Boxers are pretty crazy hyper too…i have one as well. She used to be sooooo hyper and wanting to play after an 8km (5mile) run too…her only issue is her smucked in face doesn’t bode well to heat…so she can’t handle the heat and is a lot calmer in the summer…but winter, fall and spring watch out.
She’s only 3 but has calmed down a lot now as she has a rare disease:( Spondylosis deformans…her spine grew bone spurs all under it up to her shoulder blades and has fused her spine:( So no more runs with me, big walks, playing w dogs or jumping up and down off things. It’s tough going from a crazy hyper dog to a dog who is in pain, arthritic and sleeps a ton now…we still love her to bits and she’s even more spoiled now…and i have grown stronger lifting a 64lb dog all the time (in and out of car and truck, bed and couch)
And let me tell you before this came on i couldn’t tire her out enough…in the summers we’d hit the coast (i live on the east coast too up in NB Canada) where it’s cooler and we’d go for 10km-14km hikes and then she’d be tired…ha ha. I let her off leash so she did almost double that with the running ahead and running back to me. I think Sadie is such a sweetie! She looks like she’d be a kick ass runner as well no matter the weather:) Aren’t furbabies the best!!!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
She really is crazy energetic! My brother’s golden would be pooped!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I had never heard of that bread until I started reading your blog.. Sadie is so cute!
Amy says
it seriously cracks me up how different our dogs are. I have a (Retired!) greyhound who doesn’t budge from the couch… she HATES walks but has made quite the mini racing track in our backyard around the trees when she gets her 5 minute burst of energy at 5pm everyday. So, when you and Ryan are old and grey (no pun intended), adopt a greyhound because they barely move from the couch 😉
Jolynn says
We have a weimaraner and I think they’re just as crazy as vizlas! LOL
Ani says
I have a german shorthaired pointer, Ollie (and grew up with a weimeraner-also crazy), and after our 10 mile run this morning the first thing he did was a few “excitement” laps around the dining room table…then he tried to coax my friend into wrestling with her.
Sometimes I think the runs just give these crazy dogs more energy. They get so pumped to go that when they return home post-run they just want more-but they sure are good motivators to get your butt out the door! Sometimes we’ll make sure Ollie gets a “double-dog” (two runs in one day) just so he will relax a little bit at night!!
peanutbutterfingers says
i totally agree! the runs just seem to energize sadie!
Marcee says
In searching to adopt/rescue another pooch …. preferably older ….. we were surprised to see several beautiful vizslas available at one of the rescue shelters we’ve adopted from in the past.
For sure …. I’ve learned so much from you Julie regarding this breed. Vizslas need tons of exercise/workouts. More than we can offer to these sweeties. Hopefully, they will find excellent homes.
Sadie is fortunate. Well, so are you and the hubz!!
Erin says
I love that Ollie does “excitement laps”, our chocolate lab (Joby) does the same thing! Sometimes he runs so fast he almost falls over, especially after long runs, when his excitement is at an all time high 🙂 Such lucky ‘kids’ we have!
Lauren says
My parents have 3 Australian shepherds…there is so much energy all the time! Our 13 year old still wants to play ball every time we go outside to potty…their drive & we call it “Aussie obsession” is exhausting but I love them to pieces! So much so that when I moved out 2 months later I adopted a miniature Aussie puppy! Talk about a fun size ball of constant commotion! We looked at vizslas but were not sure of their size in a 1 bedroom apartment. Also, we totally have a mommy/daddy 2012 campaign going on around here too! Good luck 🙂
Raquel says
Where is the BBQ competition? In the villages at the moment, hoping its not too far! 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
it was the junior league pig out bbq competition. we just got back… it was pretty low key… not sure it’s worth the drive. 🙂 it closes at 6 p.m.!
Denae says
We have an Australian shepherd mix dog..he’s great!!! Soo much energy but also loves to curl up with you on the couch too..:-)
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Oh yum, that coffee looks good. I want a cup now! I totally agree – fall coffee is by far the best of the year.
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
I can’t do flavored coffee for whatever reason. I just don’t like the taste of them. But I love flavored creamers and syrups! Must-haves in my daily coffee!
Andrea @ Andrea out loud! says
Aww! I just love Sadie. She reminds me so mch of my dog Kona (German shorthair)! They are such similar breeds! I have even wanting to adopt a German shorthair lately but decided itd be best to wait until we are out of our apartment, it is already a lot of work walking one crazy dog and if their were 2 of them I’d want them to have a nice yard to run in daily!
Chloe says
Oh goodness, it would be WAYY too cute to have Sadie AND a German Pointer together. way too cute!!!
Have a great weekend!
Serena says
I need a dog like that!
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
I have a Weimaraner and I totally know what you mean about endless energy!!! That pumpkin coffee sounds great!
Laura@ Backstage Balance says
We have two Australian Shepherd mixes – Bluegill is 9, and Clay is our puppy at just over one year old. They are definitely energetic 🙂 Clay is a Border Collie / Aussie mix so he’s extra neutoric!
Laura@ Backstage Balance says
Neturoic = Neurotic 🙂 darn iphone!
Sabrina @ Fit.Laugh.Love says
Bahaha. I’m reading this hanging out next to my dog. We went on a 1 mile walk two hours ago and he’s been knocked out ever since. Couch potato.
melanie says
Are you serious that Vizsla’s do not bother allergies??!! You have just made me so happy as I did not know that. I am going to have to check into this!! Every time you show Sadie I just melt and wish I could get one like her and now maybe I can. Are you really allergic to other breeds and Sadie doesn’t bother you at all? Thanks!!!:)
peanutbutterfingers says
hi melanie! i would DEFINITELY explore this because i know it’s different for everyone, but vizslas don’t affect my allergies at all! they’re NOT hypoalergenic, but they don’t have an undercoat, which helps with a lot of people who have allergies. 🙂
sherri says
Hey ladies…I’m allergic to dogs too and when I talked to the vet and ENT they both told me the same thing…there’s no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Like Julie said, everyone is different and their reaction to certain dogs is different. It’s not the dog’s hair that you’re allergic to it’s the saliva that dires on their skin and creates the dander. I hate that we have to live in a dog-free house 🙁 Good luck in your search Melanie!
Marcee says
What about poodles?
We had our Jams as a pup of 3 months, until he died at 14. Never had any allergy issues.
Lots of folks we know thought (the children) they had severe allergies …. once they found the perfect pooch …. they stopped sneezing, itching, etc.
There are also shots several times a year.
I say go for it Melanie … enjoy! Anyone else too.
ADOPT. RESCUE …. into forever homes.
Make 100% certain your pet is fixed. No more babies!
Having a pooch will change your life. For the much-much better!!
Alaina says
Border collies require a lot of attention too. When I would house sit for my aunt and uncle, their dog Jed would always try to butt in when I was reading or doing homework. Always the one who wanted to play!
Aussie’s are adorable too. 🙂
Nicole @ Healthygirladventures.wordpress.com says
pumpkin pie spice coffee looks good. I’ve got 3 dogs: red nose pit, lab and a jack russel. my pit has energetic all his life. though in the last year he starting to slow down as he is aging (he’s about 11 yrs old). I love my pups and would do anything for them. Your little fur baby is adorable. Hey like you said atleast you got a workout buddy.

Does it feel weird having a diff name? I can’t imagine having a diff last name..

I love Einstein Brothers Bagels Autumn Blend. I have gone through 2 of the bags as well as bought some of the bags they use to brew in their ginormous machines. I am now drinking Golden French Toast or Vanilla Creme for my Keurig. Pumpkin Spice is fantastic too!
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
Puggles are also just as energetic believe me!!! I’d rather have a more energetic dog though, keeps me on my toes! 🙂
Mandi says
We have two Golden Retrievers. One of our goldens, Koda, regulary runs ten miles, YES ten miles, with my husband. He can run ten miles in the morning, go to the beach all day (swim and chase balls non stop), go to the dog park, get bathed, play some more, and still not lay down at the end of the day. Nothing we have done so far has tired him out. It also takes 3-4 hours a day to tire our other one out, however, compared to the one that runs 60+ miles a week, doesn’t seem like much. 😉
I have awful allergies, as in, I get immunizations weekly (going on 3 years now), react to everything, etc. However, my reactions to dogs (via blood tests and allergy testing) isn’t awful, and I just adjust. Lots of vacuuming and keeping them clean! 🙂 So, it is do-able if you are diligent and on top of it.
Jamie says
I love your dog! So pretty!
I have a Boston, and she is the BEST! She’s a little wild, but she almost never barks…which is am-azing:)
Also, your breakfast looks fantastic. I eat egg whites everyday, and I never get tired of them. Eggs FTW!
Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Muches & Moves says
My family (he still lives with my parents, but was the family dog through high school) has a german shorthaired. He is old now. Gray in the face, fat. But he was a gorgeous dog! Definitely entergetic. Kids in the family LOVED him because he would play for hours!
