At the vet’s office this week, as Sadie sat on my lap in the waiting room, I tried flipping through a magazine.
That didn’t really work and I ended up just petting Sadie, but I managed to catch a glimpse of one article that sparked my interest.
What did your older child want to name your younger child? (Props to the kid who wanted to name their brother Mufasa. Awesome.)
This article made me laugh because my mom told me that I had very strong opinions when it came to naming my sister, Leslie. At one point the name “Wendy” was briefly discussed and I apparently had a fit because I wanted to be named Wendy since I loved the movie Peter Pan. In my four-year-old brain, if I couldn’t be Wendy, nobody could be Wendy.
I also think it’s interesting to ask your parents what your name would’ve been had you been born the opposite sex. I would’ve been Andrew. I like that name, so it would’ve been fine with me!
Breakfast
Breakfast this morning was another glorious two-egg sandwich served on top of a Thomas’ whole wheat English muffin with muenster cheese and raspberry jelly.
Plus a hot mug of foamy peanut buttercup coffee!
Questions of the Morning
- Do you know what your name would’ve been, had you been born the opposite sex?
- Did you have any opinions regarding the name of your siblings? If you’re a parent, did and of your children have an opinion about their brother or sister’s name?
Oh my goodness, I always think that naming stuff is hilarious! I’m a preschool teacher, and whenever my kiddos are expecting a sibling, I LOVE hearing their name suggestions. Some include: Princess, Baby Mary, Aurora (from the movie Tangled, I think), Sabre Tooth Tiger (hah!). Kids’ minds are fascinating!
Have a great day!
LOL! awesome!
Aurora = Sleeping Beauty 🙂
That’s it! Thank you 🙂
Kyle would have been my name had I been a boy…I’m not a fan! I was too young to have any input…they went with all Ms…Michelle and Matthew…Martina and Martin are my parents! 🙂 Do you know what you would have been called had you been a boy?
i would’ve been andrew.
My name would have been Elvis. Not even funny at all. God loves me and made me female for that reason… I’m sure of it. Haha
^ ha! Hey, is that why you are named Presley? Too cool!
and now you’re presley! i love YOUR name, but agree that elvis would’ve been… intense.
As a kid, I wished desperately that my name had been Ashley (probably because Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were my idols!) As for what my parents wanted to call me, I should first explain that my dad is Scottish and Scots tend to have some funny names sometimes. Had I been a boy, my name would have either been Alexander, or, wait for it…….. Morag!! I thank my lucky stars every day that I’m a girl!!! 🙂
i think i shall call you morag from here on out. 🙂
Oh how fun! I love thinking about names. I would have been Jacob as a boy. Which would have been alright. My mom was actually planning on naming me Shannon the entire time she was pregnant with me until I was actually born.
I would have been Andrew too if I had different chromosomes 😉 And evidently I was almost Andrew anyway since they thought I was a boy up until I popped out with lady parts!
no way! did they have an ultrasound to determine the gender and everything!?
Haha yeah they did, but I was demure and wouldn’t turn for the camera 🙂 my mom said people would come up to her on the street to tell her they could tell she was carrying a boy!
Too funny! I want to hear more of these, because funny things kids say never gets old to me.
I would have been a “Tate”. I’m not quite sure how I feel about that…so thank goodness I was a girl. Heather is much more fitting! 😉
i like tate!!
i think i would have liked tate, except now that i’ve seen that FX show American Horror Story….. i don’t think nice things when i hear “tate.” amazing how association of names with tv/movie characters can make or break it for some people!
i just asked my mom what she would have named me if i were a boy, and she replied with ” the thought never crossed my mind as i knew you were a girl from day one.” AWW. also- i hated my name (Anastasia) as a child…and much preferred to be called Natasia instead. i don’t even know.
i was too young to have any input on my younger brother’s name…my parents WERE going to name him nicholas, until on the way to the hospital on delivery day they got into some road trouble, and a cop stopped to help them. he gave them a police escort all the way to the hospital, and before wheeling my mom inside, my dad asked the cop what his name was….and thus Brian became my brother’s name 🙂
I am the baby of the family so sadly I could never partake in the naming fun! I am SO glad for your sake that your parents went with Julie instead of Wendy :)!
I love name games like this! If I was a boy, my name would have been Aaron and my parents were also torn between Meghan and Emma for my name. I am the youngest, so no younger sibling suggestions for me, but I remember wanting to name my dog Daisy so bad. I have no idea why that name spoke to me, but it did. However, by family vote, we went with Lucky instead, which I now think fit her perfectly!
I would have also been Aaron! I don’t remember trying to name any of my siblings, but I do remember my brother asking my mom to return my youngest sister in exchange for a brother!
I love name things! I would have been Daniel if I were a boy
My cousin had her second child last year. Her 2 1/2 year old son wanted his brother to be named Bob Basketball (after Bob the Builder and because he liked to play basketball at preschool; he was also apparently fascinated with the idea of middle names at the time). My cousin didn’t go with his suggestion though and named him Lucas instead.
probably a good thing. 🙂 too cute!
I would have been Matthew Ryan if I were a boy, though my dad apparently *really* wanted to name me Gus. He thought it was a good football player’s name. Seriously?
I am an only child, so I didn’t have opinions on siblings’ names, but I wrote a bunch of stories as a kid and came up with my own pen names. I really wanted to be called Caitlin or Leigh or Thia. 🙂
have you seen cinderella? whenever i hear the name gus, i always think of “gus gus” the little mouse from that movie. 🙂
That’s what I think of too!
It makes me think of the rhyme “Don’t cuss, call Gus, he will cuss for all of us!”
I am the youngest so I never got to attempt to name a sibling!! If I was a boy, I would have been named Steven. My name is Lisa Marie but my mom insists it’s not after Lisa Marie Presley!!
When my mother was pregnant with my younger sister John was being considered as the boy name; I wanted the girl name to be Pocahontas…If we could call her John, as in Captain John, why not Pocahontas?! My mom obviously said no and tried to explain to me the difference but I just couldn’t see it 😀
Haha this is hilarious bc before my younger brother was born my mon told me I could pick out the name is the baby was a girl. Little did I know, he already knew the baby was a boy! I felt very special though having such a big job! 🙂
better Monica than Carly…haha
I was supposed to be Ryan, whether I was a boy or a girl, but my two sisters were so mad that my parents didn’t “ask permission” to have me, they got to name me. So I’m Monica, after Monica Quartermain (on the soap opera General Hospital), and middle name Sue, because it rhymes with Winnie the Pooh. No lie.
If I were a boy, my name would’ve been Aaron. It’s a family name (my dad’s father’s name), and I would’ve been happy with it 🙂
I was three when my younger twin sisters were born. My dad took a home video of me talking to my mom’s stomach/soon-to-be sisters, and apparently, my mom asked if I was going to share my toys with them, and I leaned into her belly and yelled, “NO!” Ha!
HEYYY I would have been called Andrew, too! Twinsies 😉
I would have been John, but that’s what my bro ended up being!
I would have been Andrew, three. Triplets? My parents later named a cat Andrew, so they still got to use the name.
I’ve never thought to ask what my name would have been if I were a boy. Now I’ll have to ask my mom! My husband and I do enjoy thinking of names for our future kids. We talk about it so much that we’ve already agreed on a boy and girl name.
I would have been Sean!! 🙂
An PS I was redirected to a very old post of yours and I think it’s so cool that your parents are from Gettysburg! That’s where I am from and still live!! I liked seeing your pictures from there cause I know it well!
I found a list of names in my baby book. It was really cool to see a huge list of girl and boy names and how my parents narrowed it down. I was going to be Amanda Colleen, then Colleen Amanda, then they ditched the Amanda and I am Colleen Elise! Which I like way better (no offense to any Amandas out there)….
My 3 year old nephew suggested the first and middle names Cutie Pie for a girl and Spider Man for a boy for his younger sibling. Thankfully, His mom and dad decided to go with Chance Owen instead.
If I were a boy, I would have been a Michael. My brothers names both start with a B (and I always went by Becky), so in middle school, when I asked my parents what my name would have been if I were a boy, and they said Michael, I was confused since we’re all Bs.
Don’t worry, my dad assured me that I would have been called Butch. Really Butch? Thanks dad….
That is too funny! I like Zumba Applesauce too in the article…very creative! My parents knew I was a girl so they were deciding between Danielle and Megan
If I had been a boy I would have been Ryan. My older sister is named Sabrina, and I was always a little jealous of her unique name when I was one of four Jessica’s in a class. At least my name isn’t Zuma Applesauce!
My parents thought I was going to be a boy, so I was going to be named Hugh, after my dad. When it turned out that I was a girl, my dad really pushed for “Hughina.” Thankfully my mom wasn’t too out of it to nix that idea!
I think my parents were pretty set on something with Laur…it was Lauren, Laura or Laurel. Apparently my dad liked the name Ruth but my mom knew a really snotty girl named that in high school and said NO. haha!
My parents love nature so they actually gave my brothers and me nature middle names. My older brother’s is Forest, I’m Brook and my little brother’s is Woods. We spell them like that too!
I am the baby so I had no say in names. I never asked my parents if they had a boy name for me (I’m not sure they did) but if it weren’t for my Dad’s strong opposition, I would have been named Emma, which I like! But I like my name too! I’m sure there are some funny stories of parents actually letting their kids name their new babies and ending up with crazy names!
I was “supposed” to be a boy named Christopher – like Catherine I wouldn’t turn so they went off the guesses. And then I was over two months premature, my parents weren’t ready for a girl’s name at all and I was nameless for a couple of days!
I have a younger brother, but I was only 15 mo older, so I don’t know if I had thought of naming him at that point 🙂
I would have been James Elmore the III, when you’ve got a line going there’s really no options. My parents were very close to going with what they saw as the feminine version of this name: Jane Eleanor; thankfully my folks like to keep in the family and I inheirited one of my aunt’s names.
Had I been a boy, my parents planned to name me Albrecht. It’s a bit nerdy, but I don’t think I would have hated it. However, they had big plans to call me ‘Brick’ for short. I can’t imagine the burly, brainless, jock I would have turned out to be with a nickname like that!
I’m not sure what my name would have been if I would have been a boy. I know it would have had the same letter as my first name, “H.”
I had strong opinions about my sister’s name. I was obsessed with Full House and I wanted her to be named Michelle because of Michelle Tanner. Well my mom didn’t like the nicknames for Michelle so she named her something close, Melissa. I have to say that her name fits her perfectly. 🙂
I have no idea what my mom would have named me if I were a boy….good convo for the drive this weekend. I doubt I was asked what I wanted to name my siblings but I pushed for Courtney when we were picking names for little C…that was a name my mom considered for me…and being a person with an unusual name I figured someone should have the luxury of having a name no one would mess up!
You should have been Louis if you were a boy! We already call you Lou 😉
Before my little brother was born (i was 4) I remember thinking he was going to be a girl and that we HAD to name her Rachel. Well I lost on both counts…
Also I will be calling you Andrew from now on.
My name was supposed to be Sofia, but at the last second they decided on Stellina! If I was a boy it was supposed to be Francesco, but luckily my brother was born 6 years later, and he got that name!
I was supposed to be Sean Kelly if I was a boy. Along with my last name, it is quite Irish. My dad is 100% Irish ancestry. My mom didn’t like it all, so she’s glad there are 3 girls. I wanted to name my youngest sister Erica, so I told my parents, and that is her name!
I loved Peter Pan too when I was a kid! All time favorite Disney movie, along with The Little Mermaid.
I was only 15 months old when my little brother was born, so I didn’t have too many opinions on what his name should be. No idea what I would’ve been called had I been a boy, but now I want to ask my parents!
I am not sure what my parents would have named me had I been a boy but my parents were dead set on the name Lauren. And right at the last minute (as in they were filling out the birth certificate) my dad said what about Kelly? They had never even discussed Kelly yet they both agreed right there and Kelly I became! Ha!
I would have been named Peter if I was a boy! Weird! I think of it as a dog’s name (mostly because in SATC Aaden’s dog was named Pete..). My sister Isabel would have been Billy. Ha!
I would have been Roland Bruce – I thank God everyday I’m a girl 😉 And with my last name… you know why!!!
Miss you 🙂
i miss YOU, roland! i mean, ash. 🙂
My Dad would have named me Buster if I was a boy…..my Mom wanted Martin…either way I am happy I didn’t end up with either name hahah.
My cousin’s favorite show was Thomas the Tank Engine so he wanted to name his little brother Thomas. Thankfully he chose a normal name and his parents stuck with it!
When my mom was pregnant with my little sister, they thought she was a boy until the moment she popped out! She was going to be Gavin – but suddenly they had to scramble and name a baby girl! Turned out that name #2 on their list was Morgan, and since it’s both a boy’s and a girl’s name they went with it!
Interestingly, my name was going to be Heather or Erica because there’s a flower that shares both of these names (Heather in one country and Erica in another – same flower!) …I like that they settled on Erica, I find Heather to be too “soft” for my personality.
My parents also didn’t want names that could be shortened (i.e. Katherine = Kathy or Kath) so they chose Erica and Morgan….Funny though, because I’ve called my sister MORGS her whole life! HAHA!
My name was going to be Lee if I was a boy. My mom was determined to pick names that could not be shortened in any way. (My mom’s name is Susanne – and no one calls her the same thing – Susie, Susan, Sus, Sue. It’s ridic.)
My dad wanted to name my brother Wolfgang but we talked him out of that one!!
I was going to be named Nicholas if I would have been a boy. My dad had just read “Nicholas & Alexandra” – big history buff if you couldn’t tell lol.
I didn’t have a boy name that I know of but I do know that another option if I hadn’t been named Amanda was Amber. This is pretty funny because when people don’t remember my name they actually call me Amber so I guess I really look like an Amber! And at five I was allowed to give my sister her middle name and I was very nice and it is Rose.
I would have been Cosby as a boy. My dad’s good friend growing up had the name, and he died in his early 20’s. Thankfully I was a girl!
