The Name Game

June 14, 2012 by Julie 201 Comments

At the vet’s office this week, as Sadie sat on my lap in the waiting room, I tried flipping through a magazine.

That didn’t really work and I ended up just petting Sadie, but I managed to catch a glimpse of one article that sparked my interest.

redbook article

What did your older child want to name your younger child? (Props to the kid who wanted to name their brother Mufasa. Awesome.)

This article made me laugh because my mom told me that I had very strong opinions when it came to naming my sister, Leslie. At one point the name “Wendy” was briefly discussed and I apparently had a fit because I wanted to be named Wendy since I loved the movie Peter Pan. In my four-year-old brain, if I couldn’t be Wendy, nobody could be Wendy.

I also think it’s interesting to ask your parents what your name would’ve been had you been born the opposite sex. I would’ve been Andrew. I like that name, so it would’ve been fine with me!

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was another glorious two-egg sandwich served on top of a Thomas’ whole wheat English muffin with muenster cheese and raspberry jelly.

egg sandwich 015egg sandwich 016

Plus a hot mug of foamy peanut buttercup coffee!

peanut buttercup coffee

Questions of the Morning

  • Do you know what your name would’ve been, had you been born the opposite sex?
  • Did you have any opinions regarding the name of your siblings? If you’re a parent, did and of your children have an opinion about their brother or sister’s name?

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I’m the younger sibling, so I had no say, whatsoever. I don’t even think my sis could really talk when I was born, so she couldn’t have a say since she couldn’t speak.
If I were a boy, I would’ve been Levi Jackob, after my two grandfathers. It worked out. Levi is my cousin, Joey’s, middle name, and Jackob is my cousin, Jake (though it’s still his middle name).

I was nameless for about 5 days so I’m pretty sure my parents didn’t have a boys or a girls name picked out. Other female names that were in the running were Stephanie, and Mary Teresa (MT for short, so I probably would have been called “empty”).

Love all the responses! kids are so funny. I was older when my little bro was born… but my bf wanted to name his sister Little Lulu. She ended up with Stephanie, but Lulu has stuck around as a nick-name b/c Steph is super cute and tiny – and Cindy Lou in the Grinch Stole Christmas was very popular when she was younger.

They actually thought I WAS a boy until the day I was born… I guess either the tech was an idiot or the ultrasounds just weren’t that great in the 80’s! My name was going to be Keegan (which I kind of actually like!) I am an only child so I never got to have any fun with naming other siblings.

My favorite name in the article you posted the pic of is definitely ZUMA APPLESAUCE. Kids are so ricidulous. hahaha

If I had been a boy, I would have been named Michael. I just learned the other day that another girl name my mom had been throwing around was Melanie, like from “Gone With the Wind”. This discussion prompted my mom to call back and leave me a voicemail, saying that she was really glad that she chose “Anne” and wasn’t sorry at all. I guess I’d made her feel guilty . . .?

But I know SO many people named Courtney. Ah well. My aunt and my mom both have ‘K’ names, and my mom decided to go with the whole letter theme thing and gave my sister and I ‘C’ names.

I’m the youngest sibling, so the only thing I had any say in naming was our dog, Daisy, but I barely even had any say there.

I was Kimberly till right before birth when my mom got worried I’d still be writing my name when all the other kids were ready to turn in a test (seriously, they also planned on 7y of school post-HS when they divorced when i was only 2…they were VERY into education). Someone came to the hospital and said “And how is little Kimberly?” and my mother (is it horrid to say she can be a smart a$$) replied “Cheryl is doing fine.”

I don’t think my sister put in any name requests because she wasn’t very excited to have a younger sibling to share the spotlight with. If she did, it probably would’ve been a Disney villain, like Maleficent or Ursula.

I was almost named Caroline, but my aunt whose name is Carol argued that she wanted the name for her future daughter so they could be Carol and Caroline (barf). As it turned out, that’s not even close to what she ended up naming her daughter. I’m obsessed with the name, though, and plan on using it if I have a daughter.
