The Name Game

June 14, 2012 by Julie 201 Comments

At the vet’s office this week, as Sadie sat on my lap in the waiting room, I tried flipping through a magazine.

That didn’t really work and I ended up just petting Sadie, but I managed to catch a glimpse of one article that sparked my interest.

redbook article

What did your older child want to name your younger child? (Props to the kid who wanted to name their brother Mufasa. Awesome.)

This article made me laugh because my mom told me that I had very strong opinions when it came to naming my sister, Leslie. At one point the name “Wendy” was briefly discussed and I apparently had a fit because I wanted to be named Wendy since I loved the movie Peter Pan. In my four-year-old brain, if I couldn’t be Wendy, nobody could be Wendy.

I also think it’s interesting to ask your parents what your name would’ve been had you been born the opposite sex. I would’ve been Andrew. I like that name, so it would’ve been fine with me!

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was another glorious two-egg sandwich served on top of a Thomas’ whole wheat English muffin with muenster cheese and raspberry jelly.

Plus a hot mug of foamy peanut buttercup coffee!

Questions of the Morning

  • Do you know what your name would’ve been, had you been born the opposite sex?
  • Did you have any opinions regarding the name of your siblings? If you’re a parent, did and of your children have an opinion about their brother or sister’s name?

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I would have been David as a boy. When my sister was born, I was 3 and my parents asked me what I would choose- Amy or Anna- as a name—- I chose Amy, and so that’s what they went with! Ha, I’m sure there’s more to the story and their choice, but this is what they tell people

My name was supposed to be Erin Lee (my parents have the same middle name.. Lee) but my cousin popped out before me and snagged the name 😉 Now I’m Keaghan and it is definitely a conversation starter lol.. people always assume I’m a boy when they hear my name!

If I was a boy I would have been Skyler or Brandon.

Haha! Now I want to ask my mom what I wanted to name my youngest brother. I was gonna be named Gregory if I was a boy. And, actually, I was originally going to be named Samantha. My parents changed their minds last minute because I was sick and they were inspired by a brave woman they read about in the newspaper with the name Brigitt.

My youngest sister, Kelly, was born when I was 6. Though, my parents deny this, the name definitely came from me – inspired by Barbie’s little sister Kelly. At least I didn’t choose Barbie’s other sister Skipper! haha

My parents didn’t find out whether I’d be a girl of a boy, and my 6 year old sister INSISTED that I be a girl and named for my grandmother (who had just passed away) my mom was terrified of how she’s react if I was a boy. When my mom had me and called my grandparents to tell my sister I was born, apparently she answered the phone “Did you have Helen Marie yet?” My poor mother! If we were boys we would have been named William and Harry. I’m so glad we weren’t or we would have gotten endless Prince jokes.

Oh gosh, I don’t know what my name would have been if I was a boy, but I do know that my sisters wanted my nickname to be spelled “Caitie” instead of “Katie” which is actually pretty, but odd and more complicated for me to learn. 😉

If I’d been born really near Valentine’s Day, though, (I was born on Feb. 3– apparently that was far enough, phew!) I would’ve been named Valentina, so people would’ve had the chance of nicknaming me either Val or Tina, haha! 🙂

If I was a boy my name would have been Alejandro. Not kidding…I would so not be a good Alejandro. It is kind of confusin because before I was born (my parents didn’t want to know if i was a boy or girl) my parents found a cat and named him Alex…so I guess we both would have been Alex or they would have changed his name. haha. So they gave the cat my name…thankfully I was a girl.

I am not sure what my “boy” name would have been. But the name my mom had decided on for a girl was Cassandra, but when I was born she thought that was “too much” name for such a little baby and she named me Lynn. It is interesting because the name Cassandra does not suite me and I wonder if I would have been different if I had been name Cassandra like my mom’s original thought.

Then when the time came for our boy, he was pleading for Kyle, but I wanted Gavin, which I got. I would have been happy with Kyle too, but I liked the rock-n-roll aspect of Gavin. LOL

I would have been a Zachary or a Mason if I had been born a boy. But as it turns out I was actually supposed to be a Johanna but my father got confused and put the wrong name on the birth certificate. They had “discussed” Sarah Catherine but my Mom’s heart was set on Johanna. I was the 3rd and last kid so she knew she’d never have another chance. She didn’t speak to him for a week! I guess she got over it because there was no change in the birth certificate and I am still named something akin to a Catholic nun. 🙂

I was going to be named Natalie after Natalie Wood, the beautiful actress. Instead, right before I was born, my mom saw a movie in the TV Guide that starred Lindsay Wagner, and that became my name. If I had been a boy I would have been Patrick Taylor, which is what my younger brother was named. My parents named both me and my brother with the intention of calling us by our middle names, so annoying! So Kathryn Lindsay (called Lindsay) and Patrick Taylor (called Taylor)….don’t do this to your kids! 🙂

When I was born, my parents thought I was going to be a boy. Everything that my mom bought and got at her baby shower was blue. When I was born and it was announced that I was a girl, my parents were empty handed. Since my mom was still under anestesia, my dad went out for drinks with my uncle to pick out last minute baby names. They came up with Ashley Arlene. Ashley because it was 1990 and everybody was naming their baby that (awesome creativity) and Arlene because my dad thought it would be awesome if my initials were AAA along with my older sister. If I were a boy, my name would have been Jose Guadalupe Alvarez III. I clearly dodged a bullet. Haha.

When my little brother was born, my sister and I didn’t really get to have an input on baby names. There was no doubt that he would be named Jose Guadalupe. However, we all call him “Pillo” (pronounced peeyo).

Which delighted the PE coach and he made sure to yell hey to Spencer Bob every morning. His official nickname that year was Bob Drako Weirdohead. (Drako from Harry Potter, and I’m sure Weirdohead was another brother-given nickname). I can’t make this stuff up.
