New Cardio Circuit

January 15, 2011 by Julie 35 Comments

My Friday night looked like this:

  • Happy hour with coworkers
  • Late night subs from Firehouse workout 022
  • Movie and popcorn on the couch with Ryan and Sadieworkout 025

Not a bad lil’ Friday night, if you ask me!

Workout

This morning Ryan and I woke up around 8 a.m. and changed for the gym. It’s so much easier for me to get a workout in first thing on a Saturday morning. If I put it off until after lunchtime, I’m 10 times less likely to drag my butt to the gym.

I set out to complete two rounds of an awesome cardio/ total-body circuit workout that I stumbled upon yesterday when my friend Ben tweeted it to me.

His workout was slightly different, but my variation looked like this:

Each exercise should be performed for one minute, and then one minute rest before moving on to the next exercise.

  • Body weight squat
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Plank
  • Alternate leg lunge
  • Hip lift (lie on your back, knees bent, press your hips up, drop back down at a controlled pace).
  • Side plank (30 seconds each side)
  • High knee jog on the spot
  • Basic crunch
  • Mountain climbers

Ben’s workout includes a couple of different moves and calls for the circuit to be repeated three times. I did it twice before the loft where I was working out got a little too packed with people for my comfort.

The workout definitely got me sweating! Especially the mountain climbers… Phew!

After completing two rounds of that workout, I headed downstairs to finish up with 10 minutes of cardio on the stair stepper and 15 minutes on the elliptical.

While ellipticizing, I jammed out to the Pandora app on my new phone. Check out this little gem that made it into the rotation:

workout 028 “Too Close” by Next! You better believe that old school (wildly inappropriate) song got a thumbs up from this girl!

workout 029 I left the gym with greasy, sweaty and stringy hair. That’s the sign of a good workout, right?

After looking at that picture, I am suddenly hit with the urge to shower immediately.

Breakfast

After the gym, Ryan and I came home to refuel with his and hers smoothies for breakfast.

In the mix (for one smoothie):

  • 1 c. strawberry banana Chobani Greek yogurt
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 frozen banana

workout 032 Blend it up! workout 035 Gulp it down!

(About the cup… I told you my family loves these tervis tumblers! That cup was in Ryan’s Christmas stocking from my parents. That’s our wedding date, just in case you forgot. 🙂 )workout 036 This smoothie was cold, creamy and filling. It hit the spot!

Now we’re off to entertain Sadie at the dog park before I take that much-needed show-ah.

Enjoy your Saturday!

I’m jealous of your awesome workout!! My run was rather sub-par this morning, but I still had to wash my hair. Is it just me or is washing your hair really tedious when it’s not absolutely necessary? Maybe I’m just a huge grunge ball 🙂 Happy Saturday!

I have to really need to wash my hair in order for me to actually do it, otherwise it’s dry shampoo and it has to wait for another day! lol

Mountain climbers kick my butt. I’m always beat after doing them, especially for a full minute.

It took me awhile to get out of bed this morning to do an easy 6 miles. I’m still under the weather and I didn’t want to go out…. but the weather is perfect outside, so I’m glad I did it. 😀

I agree about morning workouts…the longer you wait the harder it is. You’re so lucky that you have Ryan as your gym buddy! My boyfriend is much more of an outdoor workout person so in the spring/summer/early fall I can get him out for a run or bike ride but winter I’m flyin’ solo!

That circuit looks great! Mountain climbers always kill me, I would want them done and out of the way at the beginning not the end of the workout.

hahah Too Close by next is my boyfriend and my FAVORITE song. The DJ at our favorite bar in college knew that we were going to request it every single night, so we didn’t even have to after a while.
It is SO SO ridiculous! Love it!
