A Little Whitney to Fuel Your Workout

April 7, 2014 by Julie 29 Comments

I slept horribly last night but somehow when the alarm went off at 5 a.m., I didn’t feel exhausted. I’m waiting for some fabulous afternoon lethargy to hit me like a truck, but maybe I’ll get lucky and will coast through the day without a crash. Here’s hoping!

Workout

My morning workout began with 20 minutes on the elliptical before I headed into the weight room and focused on my legs.

Here’s a brief rundown of today’s leg workout:

Leg Workout It was fast and efficient!

Once Ryan and I made it back home, we took Sadie on a quick walk and dug into breakfast.

I had limited time to shower, eat, blog and head back out the door, so my morning meal was quite basic.

almond butter and jelly

An almond butter and jelly sandwich topped with more slivered almonds for a little crunch.

Plus an orange on the side!

With breakfast in my belly, I drove back to the gym to sub for one of my fellow instructors. I made a new workout playlist last night and it was a hit. The class seemed to love the Whitney Houston remixes I included. A little throwback Whitney is always a hit!

  • I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Whitney Houston (Junior’s Happy Handbag Mix)
  • It’s Not Right But It’s Okay – Whitney Houston (Thunderpuss Mix)
  • My Love Is Your Love – Whitney Houston (Jonathan Peters Radio Mix II)

After class, I dug into lunch in the break room (tuna salad wrap + an apple + red pepper with hummus) and then it was back to work. I hope your Monday is a good one so far!

You may call that morning meal basic, but it looks deeelicious 🙂 And I definitely consider Whitney remixes prime motivational music, especially in a fitness class. Love the selections!

Your morning meal looks so yummy! What a great idea–I’ve always loved crunchy things in my food, so I like the addition of the nuts!

Wanna dance with somebody is such a fun one!!

My Zumba instructor uses My Love is Your Love as a cool-down song sometimes and it always puts me in a good mood. I bet the classes you teach are so fun. Your gym is lucky to have you 🙂

When I hear an old school favorite, it is so motivating! I love when Whitney, Madonna or ‘N Sync comes on – totally takes me back.

I love a bit of throw back music in a workout!

Although you say your breakfast is basic it looks delicious to me. Here’s hoping the afternoon lethargy doesn’t come.

I did a crazy leg workout towards the end of last week that made my quads ache for days. Love that feeling. I’ll be doing this one too. Thanks!

How early do you go to bed to get up at 5am? I try to get up that early to work out, but I always end up being completely wrecked by the end of the week. I need my sleep to function!

    Hi Julie,
Question for you: does Ryan eat the same breakfast as you most days? And if so, does that mean he helps decide what you eat in the morning?

I’m such a creature of habit that I have nearly the same overnight oats each day, because I just can’t make a big decision in the morning. I’m so impressed by your breakfast variety.

    Best,
    Ashley

One of my favorite sandwiches is peanut butter and green apple. Crunchy, sweet and tart! I’ve been short and sweet with legs lately, too but seeing changes!

Nothing like a little throw back 80’s to kick off the week! I wish I heard more of these songs on the radio more frequently instead of the same stuff over and over.

I tried squat jumps for the first time last week. Those are no joke! I was surprised by how sore I was!! It’s such a basic move, but a killer one at that!

I worked inpatient at a children’s hospital and the interns always said that it wasn’t the immediate day after losing sleep that they felt it, but two days later. I’ve noticed the same thing with myself. Whenever I don’t sleep enough, I’m fine the next day, but unexpectedly (or, now, expectedly) exhausted the next. So get some good sleep tonight to help ward it off!
