I skipped my morning workout today in favor of an extra 1.5 hours of sleep. Waking up at 6:30 a.m. when the sun is actually out sure does make getting out of bed a bit easier!
I’m hoping to take an hour break around lunchtime to sneak in a workout and think a Piloxing class may be on the agenda.
Breakfast
I wanted only one thing for breakfast this morning.
A cheesy egg sandwich!
Two fried eggs + Gouda cheese + Raspberry jelly
Happy girl!
Morning Computer Routine
As I sat down at my computer this morning, I realized I follow nearly the exact same morning computer routine day in and day out. I find the way people go about the mundane things in their lives oddly amusing, so feel free to play along and detail your morning computer routine in the comments section!
- Pandora: Pandora is always my first stop. I need some music to get me in the “work zone” and listening to my favorite Pandora stations pump me up and energize me. (I am seriously loving the Destiny’s Child Pandora station lately. Bills, Bills, Bills!)
- Gmail: I give my inbox a quick once-over. I generally just delete spam emails and press releases that don’t relate to my blog upon first glance and will read any emails that look particularly pressing. I will also respond to any emails about freelance work at this time.
- Picasa: Time to upload and edit morning breakfast photos! I use Picasa (it’s free!) for all of my photo editing and do this before I start my morning blog post. (I go into more detail about blog photography and photo editing in this post.)
- Windows Live Writer: The best blogging tool in the world! Time to write and publish my morning blog post! This is also when I catch up on blog comments I may have missed from the night before.
- Hootsuite + Google Reader: I use Hootsuite to manage my Twitter account and hop on over to the site to check Twitter after my blog post is published and chat with you fine people! I’ll also check Google Reader at this time and catch up on my favorite blogs.
- Microsoft Word: I usually sit down at my computer around 7 a.m., so by now it’s usually right around 8:30 a.m. and time to work on freelance assignments!
Questions of the Morning
- What does your morning computer routine look like?
- What is the first website you visit?
Sara @my less serious life says
glad to know other people have morning computer routines. my routine:

2) my blog and load my blog post
3) twitter (read tweets and post my new blog link)
4) pinterest
5) facebook
6) work gmail
7) blogs!
Tayler says
I tend to find that in the morning I check my personal e-mail, my school e-mail and myUCF first to make sure that I don’t have anything crucial to take care and then hop on over to Perez Hilton and YahooNews, I guess the two cancel each other out, but I’m a huge celeb junkie. I also throw Facebook in to the mix but mind myself going on the site by habit even when I meant to be looking up something different!
Jana says
Pandora is my first stop too!
You should try the TLC station. It gets me in the mood with all those sweet old school jams!
peanutbutterfingers says
i’m on it! thanks for the rec! sounds right up my alley.
Linz @ Itz Linz says
I skipped my morning workout today too. It will have to wait until after my workshop is complete today. Boo, but I wanted the extra sleep! I’ve heard so much about Windows Live Writer, but don’t know anything about computers/programs, and am still so new to blogging… Is it easy to figure out on my own? I feel like every good blogger uses it – I think I need to take the plunge!
peanutbutterfingers says
yes! it is VERY user friendly (easier than wordpress, i think!) and makes blogging a lot less time consuming. highly recommended!
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
This may sound like a silly question but what does it offer that makes it less time consuming? I have it on my computer but when I used it, I found it to be about the same as wordpress. Maybe because I use the free version? Also, I use my MAC pretty often and isn’t available over there.
Some days I feel like it takes forever to get my blog posted and would love to stream line the process!
peanutbutterfingers says
oh my gosh, it saves me a ton of time! i love the features like automatic linking, the ability to edit photos in live writer, the easy photo uploading where you can upload all photos at once, etc.
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
I had no idea you could do all of that with it. I gave it a more in depth look tonight and I see where you can add the Picasa Plug In but I am SO not computer savvy and couldn’t figure it out. I have a feeling with a little trial and error and lots of frustration I will eventually get it. Maybe….ha!!
MegS says
My morning routine is getting my coffee ready, showering, and then eating breakfast. I listen to Pandora while I do my hair and make-up! Pandora was such a great idea to create!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I usually check my personal email/blog email/work email, update my blog, and then I’ll read other blogs while I take breaks from working 🙂
Beccalou says
Your post made me feel a little less quirky about my routine!
I get up around 4am, sitting down to the computer with a cup of tea
First, I get online to the one year bible site and feast on a bit of God’s good word to get me going
Then, I work on some online group study stuff that I do with some friends from church every day…
Gmail comes next, usually nothing too surprising there
Facebook stalking follows and it never fails to amaze me how many things can happen on there while I sleep…
Then to pioneerwoman.com for some fun bloggity stuff
Then, my favorite, pbfingers!
It all takes me about 45 minutes to an hour, then I am out the door for a run, energized with lots to ponder as I beat some cheeks down the street.
My reward when I get home from running is that there is usually a new morning post from you!
Thanks for doing this blog. It has been an inspiration every day 🙂
Khushboo Thadani says
Haha loved reading your morning routine! When I get to work, I usually open up my work Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, my blog and a few other blogs to read..I give myself 30-45 minutes of “free time” and then get into work mode!
laurie says
My morning routine is:
1.University of Phoenix (20 days of school left).
2. Facebook
3. Nike+ (I run before getting on the computer)
4. Daily Mile
5. Twitter
6. Email
When I get to work. I read all the blogs in my RSS feed.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oh I totally do the same thing every morning as well! My posts are usually on auto-publish for the wee hours of the morning, so by the time I’m actually AT my computer, it’s…
1) Hootsuite and Facebook
2) Blog comments
3) Personal Gmail
4) Blog Gmail
5) Uploading photos to prep for future posts
6) Whatever else I have time for before heading to work!
Michelle Hunt says
Gmail, Blog mail, Twitter, Recipage, Blog Post, Facebook…
Then I catch up on my favourite blogs that have posted while I’ve been asleep in a different time zone! 🙂
Unfortunately then it’s time for me to do some work!
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
Breakfast looks great, as usual!
I always check my email and facebook first thing in the morning!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Gmail is always my first stop – then Facebook, then my blog’s admin page – all on the trolley on the way to work. 🙂
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
During the summer, my computer routine is Gmail, Google Reader, Twitter. During the school year, it’s a little different. I log-on to my work e-mail first, but try to get to school early enough to read a few blog posts in peace & quiet before the day starts!
Melissa says
5am wake-up, go to the bathroom, feed cats, make coffee, shower, drink coffee while watching way too early with willie geist on msnbc and reading blogs, hair/makeup/get dressed/pack gymbag, leave at 7am for work, work til 4:30, gym/run, home, eat, relax w hubby..i need to spice my routine up, lol!
molly @ heart, sole & cereal says
my routine is pretty similar to yours. recap any leftovers from yesterday/breakfast in my morning post, google reader, check twitter, (online shop), check the news, (online shop). oh and then maybe some online shopping.
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
My first website is usually wordpress so I can publish my blog post. Then I catch up on the news, followed by all the blogs I read like yours! I almost never listen to music at my computer. The only time I flip on Pandora is when I’m cleaning haha. I guess I’m not a musical person!
Catherine says
I’ve been getting up at 4:30 AM with my husband, who just started clinicals for med school. He has to be at the hospital for rounds by 4:45 AM, so I like being able to hang out and brush our teeth together in the morning at least! And it makes me go to bed with him at the same time in the evenings. Anyway, it KILLS me to get up before the sun! But I’ve been super productive. The other day, I did four loads of laundry, grocery shopping, and made (your) homemade whole wheat pancakes… all before I was at work at 8:30 AM!
Rachel says
Morning routines, I feel, are key to a day and start me off on the right foot every morning! I first check various emails and twitter on my phone on the way to work and immediately upon sitting down at my desk I come to PBFingers. Since I am in Canada, we don’t have Pandora but I listen to 8 Tracks which sounds different and similar! Hope you have an awesome day, your blog provides much needed distraction from my terrible current summer job, motivation for me to eat and be a healthier person and AMAZING circuit workouts which are my favourite!
prissy says
Oh how I do miss a morning routine! After my lay off at Battered Women’s Program. I decided to just contract out. So far it has been great! Never a dull moment. I have learned and expeeienced so much.
On a quassi normal day such as today, I get up at 6am. I go downstiars and make a cup of my favourite tea, feed Promise andmakebreakfast. Throw on mt bathing suit andgo for a long swim! I have been a swimmer my whole life and swam for tthe country I used to live in. What a blast.
I read my daughter’ blog and yours. I love both. Check facebook and then,,,,, it varies day to day. This week is hectic, three court cases. Two dv and one federal. workwith law enforcement on anattempted murder. One hospital appearance. Checked that one off yesterday
Proceeded to walk rightinto a crime scene! Always fun!
The rest of my week will be spent with my little man.Owen Ray! Grandmom for the first time! I will never be the same!
TERRIFIC TUESDAY JULIE!
Michelle says
My morning routine generally involves chasing a 3-year old around the house threatening to cut off her hair if she doesn’t let me do it — and reminding my 6- year old (at least 10 times) that he needs to go brush his teeth. I remember when my mornings were much more orderly — and I have to say I kinda love the chaos 🙂
Mrs Type A says
When I get to work everyday I turn on the computer and read my work email, gmail, look at facebook, read the blogs on my blogroll & post myself, if I’m going to. Then I usually check twitter and get to work!
I do this while eating the same breakfast nearly every day– greek yogurt with granola and sometimes blueberries or raspberries & a coffee.
Beks says
I don’t have a computer routine until I get to work (I don’t get up earlier than 6:45, usually). Then I pull up all my systems, get my first assignment going, and then check blogs.
On weekends, I usually check my email, facebook, blogger, and then any particular trashy news sites that interest me.
I do remember in college, I’d get up, do email, myspace, facebook, IMDB and then Yahoo news, all before going to breakfast and then my first class. Now MySpace is basically defunct (I haven’t been on mine in about three years).
sasha says
what are some of your favorite blogs? 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
here’s a list: https://www.pbfingers.com/favs-2/blogroll/
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
I download PaintNET for free, which I’ve really enjoyed. I keep hearing good things about Picasa though, so I may have to check that out soon.
Cristina says
Funny, I just wrote <a href="http://cmroman.com/2012/06/26/my-morning-internet-routine/"a similar blog post! My morning internet routine consists of LinkedIn, Google Reader, Google Calendar, and checking my Google Alerts, among others.
Kelly says
My morning routine:
4:50am: Alarm Goes Off. (SHOOT ME!!!)
5:10am: Leave for the Gym
5:30 – 6:30: GYM
6:45 – 7:15: Walk the Dog
7:15: BREAKFAST
8:00: Shower
8:30: Leave for work
I usually surf the web while I eat breakfast. My morning routine is TIGHT so I have definitely gotten it down to a T. I lay out my clothes the night before and I usually only wash my hair every other day. On my hair washing days I usually have to shorten my workout to 45 minutes at the gym to make up the extra time.
The first website I check in my hotmail account and then I move onto blogs.
LONGEST COMMENT EVER.
Lindsey says
Turn on my laptop, load Google reader and Twitter and start my way through the feeds – that’s at home. At work – I first check my email, the load Twitter, the local news and Poeple.com and spend about 15 minutes going through those before getting started with my day.
Jessica L. says
I do Facebook, PerezHilton, PBFingers and then all my other blogs.
You should seriously try Spice Girls Radio! Everyone at my work is hooked! =)
Christina says
I blog first thing in the am then it’s off to the economist and google reader. I have bills, bills, bills! Stuck in my head! Try backstreet boys radio. My friends and I recreated the backstreet boys an put a neighboorhood show on. I was nick carter. Oh boy haha! Have a great day 🙂
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
my email, Google Reader, Twitter, and Facebook are my essentials in the morning. I always check the forecast as well before I head to work because I work outside. It’s always nice to know if I should be wearing shorts or a rain jacket.
Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets says
I love hearing about other people’s routines! I particularly loved when you talked about your morning/getting ready routine .. is that weird? Hahah. My mornings are usually pretty rushed as I attempt to get ready, eat breakfast + pack a lunch for myself & my boyfriend before going to work, so I only hop on Facebook + WordPress/Twitter for about 10 minutes every morning! Sad, but true: Facebook is the first + last thing I look at on my computer every day hahah.
Jeannie says
Alarm 615
Get out of bed, eat breakfast, check gmail, Facebook 630
Leave for gym 7
Home 815 Read tons of blogs, recheck fb and gmail and start working (I work from home)
Repeat
I “like” a lot of pages on fb -news, blogs, celebrity, cooking sites etc so I frequently am checking fb thoughout the day. I use pandora for cleaning and check pinterest weekly. 🙂
I’m addicted to my iPhone and iPad!
Ilene says
Hi Julie!
I’ve noticed your meals look more substantial compared to when you worked full-time. It could just be the amazing good photography haha, but I was wondering if you have transitioned to more of a 3 meals a day girl as opposed to 5-6 smaller meals a day.
Thanks and have a great day! 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
nope, still a 5 – 6 meal kind of girl! 🙂
Megan@ The Running Doc says
My morning computer routine goes in this order:
1. Work e-mail
2. Facebook
3. G-mail
4. G-reader
5. Yahoo
6. Pandora
And once the music is on, it’s actually time to start work. 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I usually start with email (from my phone), then computer to publish the day’s post (that I write the night before), and then make my way to Facebook and Google Reader. Meanwhile I have Twitter open on the side and check as needed.
Novella @ A Healthy Medium says
Working in an office makes the morning computer routine less fun, but mine looks something like this:
-work email
-gmail
-facebook (which usually just stays open for the whole day lol, oops!)
-blogs
-quick twitter scan
-then it’s actually time to do work 🙁
Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! says
I just taught a Piloxing class! It is one of my favorite formats to take and teach! 🙂 I hope you have fun in class. I usually do all of my blogging at night, so my night time computer routine runs like this:
-facebook
-gmail
-favorite blogs
-time to do some blogging!
Allison @ Running Through Red Lights says
I’m all about routine! Days that I have to work in the morning really throw off the rest of my day. I usually go through the following:
-work email
-write blog post (on days I have something to say)
-catch up on reading blogs
-Twitter
-Facebook
Repeat in the evening, minus blog post writing.
Joely says
I start out checking my email, then a quick check on Facebook, sparkpeople.com to spin the daily points wheel, check the vlogs I follow on YouTube, then I start checking blogs (yours is always first), then back to Facebook to play games. LOL! This is of course, in between making sure my kiddies are fed and happy 🙂
Rachel says
I usually log my calories (myfitnesspal), check blogs (yours is always first actually haha), school email, gmail, tumblr, and twitter haha
Charlotte says
I love talking about people’s routines! It’s so funny that you mention this today, cause just yesterday I wrote mine down just out of my own curiosity.
My morning routine (I like that the comments are including more than just the computer portion) is:
-Wake up
-Do simple bodyweight circuit to get the blood flowing (NOT a morning person, so the full workout comes after work)
-Get ready
-Bike to the office
-Sip a protein shake and black coffee at my desk while I do my computer routine, which is:
-Work email
-Gmail
-Twitter
-Facebook
-Pinterest
-Google Reader
Janice says
I love reading about other people’s routines!
Mine is:
Get out of bed, then…
1) Gmail – deleting loads of freecycle emails
2) Facebook
3) Etsy – to see if I made any new sales
4) Pbfingers! And a couple other blogs
If I’m feeling particularly lazy, I will do all of that on my phone instead of going to my computer.
Then it’s on to my morning workout.
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
I use Picasa as well and it makes it SO easy for editing and uploading photos.
My routine goes something like this:
-Check email from my phone before getting out of bed
-Get my kids their milk/breakfast
-Work on blog and publish if it is ready
-Read my favorite blogs and comment if needed
-Log on to other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
-Workout(though I hope to start doing this MUCH earlier in the morning)
Jeannie says
I am new to google reader..does anyone know if you can view comments or comment in that site?
peanutbutterfingers says
unfortuately, no. definitely one of the downsides!
Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy says
i’m glad i’m not the only one with a morning routine! and btw, that sammie looks outrageous! i love that you addd jam with it! yum!
Hayley says
I wake up and make a cup of coffee and then sit down at my desk and check my gmail. after that, the first thing I do is go to YOUR blog! I find I can relate to a lot of things that go on in your life and I like reading about your day-to-day activities before starting mine! I then read a few other blogs, check Facebook quickly, and get to work on a sociological research project I am doing right now. I wake up at 8:00 AM though, I could never get myself out of bed any earlier than that 🙂
Mary @Mary Had a Little Blog says
I was just thinking about this this morning!! I totally have a routine in the morning and I didn’t even realize it! I get into work, check my email, check my personal email, check new blog posts and then write my own post 🙂
Rachelle says
Your routine is so different from mine!
1. email
2. My blog (http://rachellelala.wordpress.com/)
2. a lot of the time it’s other blogs
3. facebook
4. whatever I feel like
I hope you have a great morning!
Sara @ Magia e Pasta says
I have just moved back to the States from living abroad and don’t start work until the end of the month – but I am eager to get into a routine! Right now, I don’t have a lot going on so my morning routine consists of getting up late, making breakfast, then catching up on blog posts on Google Reader, and then posting my own! I have Facebook and email on my phone, so I don’t spend a lot of time on those websites.
