Making the Switch to Bloglovin’

June 26, 2013 by Julie 102 Comments

Good morning!

I hope you’re feeling well-rested today! I don’t have to go into work until later this morning, so I jumped at the chance to sleep in a bit.

Once I woke up, I reheated the eggs I prepared last night. As I made dinner yesterday, I thought I had to work the early shift at the gym again today and simultaneously prepared breakfast for myself. After checking my schedule on my phone before bed, I realized my error but took advantage of my prep work this morning and ate the eggs anyway.

Plus a hot cup of coffee on the side!

I will be heading out the door soon to train a client and tackle my own workout for the day. I’ll see you crazy kids after lunch!

Now for some blog talk…

Switching from Google Reader to Bloglovin’

If you’re a big-time blog reader like me, you’ve likely heard the bad news about Google Reader. (For those of you who may be in the dark about Google Reader, it is a website that allows blog readers to read their favorite blogs in one place.) Google Reader is shutting down on July 1.

google readerI’ve been in denial and have been reading all of my favorite blogs in Google Reader ever since I heard the news, but during the nearly eight hours of flight delays I experienced last week as I traveled to San Francisco, I began to do a little research and signed up for Bloglovin’. Another similar website that has received a lot of praise is Feedly, so you might want to check that out as well.

Both Bloglovin’ and Feedly import your previous Google Reader feed, making it easy to continue to follow your favorite blogs in one place.

Also, if you’re a blogger and want to add the “follow this blog with bloglovin’” button you see on the right hand side of my blog, you can click here for a tutorial.

follow this blog with bloglovin

Simply click the icon and type in the name of your blog. Then click “how to put this icon on your blog” and follow the instructions. Since I use WordPress, I just copy and pasted the HTML code into a text box and then dropped the text box widget into the side bar to the right of my blog. (Check their tutorial. I promise they make it simple!)

I still haven’t downloaded the Bloglovin’ or Feedly apps on my phone yet, so I’m hoping they are user friendly!

If you’re looking for more blogging-related posts, here are a few I’ve published on the blog in the past:

    • How do you read blogs? Email subscription? Visit the website directly? Through Google Reader, Feedly or Bloglovin’?

I almost always read blogs through Google Reader, though sometimes I just mark all of them as read when too many accumulate and visit my favorite blogs directly on the blog’s website.

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

I use blog lovin! I try to read them all but once the number creeps to over 30 I mark all as read and go to the sites for my favs! The app is nice but it is hard to comment on blogs with it.

When I heard the news about Google Reader, I switched to Bloglovin’. This was about three months ago (maybe more), and I’ve been very impressed so far. I truly think that it’s easier to use than Google Reader was, and I’m far more impressed with the iPhone and iPad apps.

Hope it works well for you, too!

I’ve actually always used Bloglovin, and I’m a fan! Bloglovin is super easy to use, so I think you’ll like it.

Thanks for the links to other posts you’ve written on blogging. I’m looking to expand my writing a bit more, so this is helpful.

I switched to Bloglovin’ on my phone a while back and I LOVE it. Easy to use and easy to read (the text isn’t too miniscule to read). My only gripe – I can’t comment on blogs through the app (or at least I haven’t figured that part out yet).

I have used Google Reader for forever, but when I got a new phone last week I discovered that I couldn’t find it in the play store anymore (I have a droid). I switched over to feedly, and it is really user friendly (at least the app is so far).

Does all this mean that the Reader in WordPress, where it shows recent posts under the title of Blogs I Love, is a Google Reader? I thought it was a WordPress reader. Sorry I’m a bit slow in understanding this, but does that mean you have to switch your blog from WordPress to Bloglovin? Will this also affect the people that follow my blog? I’d be so appreciative of any input. Thanks!

Nonono she’s not talking about the site she posts her blog through, Google Reader is a site that compiles blogs for other people to read. It’s not a publishing site. I am not a blogger, but I use Google reader so that I don’t have to visit each blog I follow directly to see if they have updated.

Feedly has been great for customization. I really like the “magazine” view to scan through photos, and I can set my newsy blogs to “title” view (Google Reader-like).

I actually tried theoldreader.com for about 3 seconds and I think it’s better than feedly and bloglovin’ so I guess I’ll be headed there once google reader shuts down for good.

I feel like I’m one of very few people who does this, but I’m all about actually going to the real blog’s website. I don’t use Google Reader, Feedly, Bloglovin’, etc. — I just really enjoy going to people’s actual blogs!

I ended up chosing Bloglovin’ too! So far, I’m happy with the switch. I was going to go with feedly, but it doesn’t work on IE (and becuase I work for the federal government, I am forced to use IE at work) so that was a no go for me. Glad to see other people chosing Bloglovin’ too! I’ve found it to be super Blogger friendly 🙂

Reading this post through Blog Lovin’ right now. I love it! One of the best aspects (to me) is that Blog Lovin’ allows you to see the design of the actual site. Bloggers work so hard on their space, I want to see ’em!

I switched to Feedly a few months ago when I learned that Google reader was going to be shut down. I took me a while to stop fighting and accept that I had to embrace Feedly and let go of Google reader, but once I did, I’ve got to say that I really love Feedly. The apps for iPhone and iPad are terrific and, dare I say it, easier to navigate than Google reader was.

I have tried to find some other blogs to read in addition to yours (hey – sometimes the work day is slow 😉 but haven’t found any remotely as well done as yours. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
